Trying to upgrade Windows 7 Home Premium to Windows 11

One of my neighbours wanted to update a PC they bought to Windows 11. I first cleared the folders within C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\Download, then I tried to install Windows 11 through a Clean Boot, but no matter what, MediaCreationToolW11 consistently has given me this error:

There was a problem running this tool

We're not sure what happened, but we're unable to run this tool on your PC. If you continue experiencing problems, reference the error code when contacting customer support. Error code: 0x80072F8F - 0x20000

Is there any other ways I could attempt to update to Windows 11? And before I forget to mention, the computer that I'm attempting to update is a HP 420-1000t model. Hope to hear from technical support soon!

    Hi,

first off, a PC that is shipped with Windows 7 is probably not able to upgrade to Windows 11.

If it isn't compatible, the installation will show a message explaining that the PC does not meet the minimum requirements.

To try to install Windows 11 if you can't upgrade, I would suggest you create an installation media for Windows 11 (probably a USB stick) on another PC, and then boot the PC from that.

However, installing from that will wipe the harddrive in the process deleting all data and apps on the PC.

I am also unsure whether you can directly upgrade from 7 to 11, or if you need to go to Windows 10 first.

Remember to make a backup of any data before you make big system changes like this.

    Regards,

    LightJack

7 > 11 would be a clean install. and you have to buy it.

But computer 18 months or older than the release of 11 are not suitable to run 11.

    Specifically check this:

First, note that it is not possible to upgrade from 7 to 11. You would need to do a clean installation of 11.

Second, it is highly unlikely that a Windows 7-era computer is compatible with Windows 11.

You couldn't directly upgrade Windows 7 to Windows 11 and most likely the system is not compatible.

However, you may create a bootable Windows 11 installation media.

The error you mentioned is related to TLS 1.1 and TLS 1.2 and in general if you update Windows 7 and try again it should work. If not, you may have a look at Update to enable TLS 1.1 and TLS 1.2 as default secure protocols in WinHTTP in Windows (microsoft.com)
