Spotify app repeatedly crashing due to combase.dll error

Anonymous
2022-06-21T21:26:46+00:00

The Spotify app crashes and just closes in the background. I have uninstalled and cleared the app from the C drive folders as well as the registry after the uninstallation. Even used CCleaner to clear registry after uninstallation. The app was then reinstalled through the windows store and the issue still persists.

Some online suggested fixes asked me to try compability mode, but I am unable to access the exe file to attempt to turn on compability mode or anything since it was installed through the windows store. I am also unable to replace the combase.dll file due to access restrictions. I am at a loss for a fix, the crash happens routinely several times a day.

Is it too much to ask to simply leave spotify running for some background music on Windows 10?

    Indeed, DannyVee89.

I've studied my logs and this started happening for me on june 23.

I hanen't done anything with my system since then and have no noticed corruptions according to the commands entered above.

My guess is also that Spotify.exe needs a patch.

Thank you again Mosken. I have tried the step of reinstalling the Windows store and the issue still persists.

I noticed the issue poping up for alot of other users on the Spotify forums and it seems like it may be an issue with a recent app update put out by Spotify. Before I go through the process to reinstall windows I am going to wait awhile to see if Spotify comes out with an app update that fixes the issue.

Thank you again for you help! I will post another reply / update if Spotify fixes the issue or not at some point.

    Hi DannyVee89,

If the solution for Spotify doesn't work, it is recommended that you try to use the following command to reinstall the Microsoft Store, and then restart the system to see if the app works properly again. Please run Power Shell as an administrator ("Win" logo key + "Q", enter "Power Shell ", select "Run as administrator"), and enter the following command.

    $manifest = (Get-AppxPackage Microsoft.WindowsStore).InstallLocation + '\AppxManifest.xml'

    Add-AppxPackage -DisableDevelopmentMode -Register $manifest

Then if the above scheme still doesn't work, you can try to override the system. Please rest assured that override operating system will theoretically not affect your data and applications (you need to choose to keep files and applications in the next steps), just update all the system files are the latest. If you have important data, it is recommended that you make additional backups to prevent accidental loss of your data. Also make sure your system disk has enough free space, at least 40GB.

    Download ISO

    Visit

Download Windows 11 (microsoft.com) / Download Windows 10 (microsoft.com) (choose the one which suit for your current system)

and click "Download Now" to download MCT (Media Control Tool), then download and run the program, select "Create installation media (USB flash drive, DVD or ISO file) for another PC” , and then choose Language, Version, Architecture (if you are not sure about these, choose "Use the recommended options for this PC"), then select "ISO file" in the "Select Media to Use" interface, and then a windows ISO file will be downloaded to your disk (about 4-5G in size, it is recommended that you choose a non-system disk).

    Choose to override system

After the download is complete, double-click the ISO file, double-click to run "setup.exe" in the open file explorer, and select "Change how Windows Installer downloads updates" > "Download updates, drivers and optional features", Select "Keep personal files and apps" after accepting the terms of the agreement, then click "Next" > "Install". Then the system will reboot a few times, and then enter the welcome screen.

If you found the suggestions in the above reply helpful, you can rate the reply as "Helpful" to help others with the same problem.

Hi, thank you for the reply. I've successfully completed each of the 5 steps you have mentioned (thank you for the clear and easy to follow instructions) and unfortunately the issue persists. In addition, I have also upgraded my machine to Windows 11 last night, just to try it, but that does not fix the problem either. Is there an issue with the Combase.dll? Is there a way to reinstall or repair that?

Edit: in addition to the 5 steps mentioned here, I also disabled Spotify's ability to show local files and also turned off all the local directories from the Spotify App settings, as suggested on a Spotify forum. This did not fix the issue either.

Spotify just crashed again and here are the latest error logs from the event viewer below:

    Hi DannyVee89,

Welcome to post in Microsoft Community. I'm Mosken, let me help you figure it out.

According to your description, I knew that your Windows Store install of Spotify crashes and the problem persists after reinstallation. Is that right?

First of all, the DLL file error should be caused by the corruption of the system file. In theory, there is no need to manually modify the properties of the .exe file, especially for applications installed from the Windows Store.

It is recommended that you try the solutions below to fix the app.

    1. Clear the Microsoft Store cache

"Win" logo key + "R" to open "Run", type "wsreset.exe", and hit enter (this will open a blank "Command Prompt" window, which will close and automatically open the Microsoft Store after about 10 seconds).

    2. Set the correct time zone and time, geographic location

Make sure your system time and time zone settings are consistent with the environment you are in. You can check this in the settings. Win + I to open Windows Settings > Time & Language >

    • Date & time*, enable ”Set time automatically“ and "Set time zone automatically".*
    • And "Language & Region", then set it according to your actual situation.

    3. Repair command

Then such a problem may be caused by corrupted system files. You can try the following commands to try to fix it. Please run Command Prompt as an administrator ("Win" logo key + "Q", enter "cmd", select "Run as administrator"), and enter the following commands one by one. These two commands require network support, please keep your network connection smooth and stable.

    sfc /scannow

    DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

    4. Repair Spotify app

"Win" logo key + "Q" to open the search box and enter "Spotify", right-click "Spotify" at the top of the result list > "App settings" > "Repair".

    5. Check for Spotify app Updates

Open the Microsoft Store, click "Library" in the lower left corner, then you will see the installed applications, click "Get updates" to see if there any available update for the application, and click the "Update" button on the right to update.

The above steps are provided based on the information I have learned so far, I wish that will be helpful to you. If your problem still cannot be solved by these steps, you could tell me the specific situation in the next reply. I will continue to assist you in solving the problem.
