How to change default graphics? (Universal default)

I have been trying to figure out a way to get Windows 10 to default to my integrated graphics. I intend to use my Nvidia dGPU only during graphically/computationally intensive workloads. I basically want the 'Let Windows Decide' option in in the windows graphics settings to choose integrated graphics so my laptop can last for at least its advertised battery life. Manually setting every GUI app I use to 'Power Saving' is too much when I only have a handful of instances that I'd want utilizing the dGPU.

Thanks for replying. I didn't use NVIDIA Control Panel, as NVCP says that "Windows OS now manages selection of the graphics processor".

I have since solved my issue, as the '[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\DirectX\UserGpuPreferences]' registry key holds the settings for GUI Windows Graphics Settings Menu, and setting the "(Default)" string to "GpuPreference=1;" seems to have done the trick.

    Hello,

I'm not sure if its exactly what you're after but I use the Nvidia Control Panel if I want to specify which graphics is used for certain programs - integrated or Nvidia. For example, my Nvidia GPU only runs when I am:

    1. Video Editing in Vegas Movie Studio
    2. Recording Xbox gameplay via the Elgato game capture software
    3. On the very rare occasion that I play a game on my PC.

Pretty much all other times, my integrated graphics is being used. These settings can be changed in Nvidia Control Panel. May not be what you're after but thought I'd mention it.

Edit: I should also mention that Nvidia Control Panel also allows a 'Global' choice of GPU. For example, Choosing integrated GPU for everything and then manually choosing which programs use the Nvidia GPU. Nvidia Control Panel should already be installed on your machine.

    Cheers.

Methods may vary depending upon the computer manufacturer for those that do not modify the registry.

    Options may be located:

    a) BIOS

    b) Nvidia control panel

    c) Device manager

These are methods for Dell and some HP computers:
