Windows 11 Update KB5015882 fails with error code 0x8000ffff

Second time in a row now with a Windows 11 Update and exactly the same error code of 0x8000ffff. Had the same error code with the previous update.

However, this time the issue is affecting both my PCs and both with the same error code.

Never had a problem before.

Absolutely fed up with this nonsense which has wasted most of the day trying to get the updates to install on my two systems, without success.

How do I fix it?

Interesting and I suppose mileage with this issue may vary. Microsoft obviously hadn't tested it fully or properly before releasing it to the masses.

On both my systems the update would only install after I had fully removed Malwarebytes, and then only after using the ISO to reinstall the Win 11 subsystem, and thereafter still having to manually install the offending update.

Microsoft really need to get their act together on these updates! This is now twice in short succession that I've encountered an update problem with a 2 hour completion time, and a Win 11 subsystem install the only fix to the the problem.

My laptop is a top of the range Dell 'XPS 15 9510' which is less than 6 months old and came standard with Win 11 Pro installed.

A move to a Mac is looking to be a good proposition.

Try downloading from here and then install: https://www.catalog.update.microsoft.com/Search.aspx?q=KB5015882

    See if this helps:

    https://www.ionos.com/digitalguide/server/configuration/fixing-error-0x8000ffff/#:~:text=Error%200x8000ffff%20is%20usually%20caused,when%20googling%20Windows%20error%20messages.

    Quoting the article:

Error code 0x8000ffff occurs relatively frequently in Windows systems because it can refer to errors in many different locations within the system instead of one specific error. Error 0x8000ffff is usually caused by problems with third-party programs and not by corrupted or missing Windows components. In most cases, third-party antivirus software is the cause of the “unexpected error.”

    Hi Craig,

Install on the laptop was also successful:

The entire process took around two hours to complete. So, both systems are now patched with the KB5015882 update.

However, I'm not impressed that I had to do all this just to install an update. Microsoft really need to get their act together with these Windows 11 updates.

At least I know that an In-place upgrade does work to sort out troublesome updates, and additionally retains all your personal files and apps.

One final question I have: Can I retain the "Windows 11 Disk Image ISO" for future use, just in case this occurs again?

    Thanks.

    Hi Craig,

Have removed both Malwarebytes & Avira Security which leaves only Microsoft Defender protecting my system.

I'm now trying an In-place upgrade on my Desktop Windows 11 System to see if that solves the problem.

    ISO is now downloading.

Thanks and will let you know if that solves the problem.

    Appreciate your help.

Thanks for the reply and suggestion but have already tried that on both systems without success.
