Getting BSODs When Playing a Specific Game

Starting last week I began to get BSODs seemingly out of nowhere when playing a game called The Crew 2. I began to experience blue screens almost every time I played that game. This issue has never happened before and I haven't updated Windows or any drivers prior to this. I use on a laptop so I haven't modified any hardware components at all. I also tried playing other games like Forza Horizon 5 and it doesn't seem to affect any other games. When using my computer normally I also haven't experienced that issue.

I have gotten around 7 blue screens from The Crew 2 over the past week. It seems that this issue only happens around 5 minutes after I start an event/race. I can stay in freedrive for hours on end without any issue. I have also noticed that it only happens when I'm using keyboard but more testing is needed to see if that's the case.

Every BSOD that I got has the error code CRITICAL_PROCESS_DIED and it is always stuck at 0%. When my computer finally restarts, there is no dump file no matter what option I choose in the Write Debugging Information section. However, when I go into event viewer, there is an error from "volmgr" with event ID 161 which has the message "Dump file creation failed due to error during dump creation."

I have already tried the following:

-Monitoring temperatures (CPU/GPU is around 80C which is normal for a laptop)

-Running a memory diagnostic

-Updating my NVIDIA drivers

-Verifying the game files via Steam

-Running sfc /scannow and /chkdsk

-Unplugging all external devices (like my steering wheel and external hard drive)

-Doing a full scan of my computer for viruses using Windows Defender

I already tried posting the same thing on the Ubisoft forums but no one there helped me at all so I decided to try to get help here. Keep in mind, this issue ONLY affects The Crew 2 and ONLY happens under specific circumstances. This means that it is most definitely NOT an issue with my hardware or thermals.

Update: It has been nearly 2 weeks since this issue started and the problem has gotten worse. A few days ago this issue started happening when playing games like Forza Horizon 5, although there wasn't any BSODs but my entire computer just froze and restarted after a few minutes. But today this issue has gotten even worse where it would give me a BSOD playing extremely simple games like Roblox. So far, EVERY BSOD that I got had the stop code CRITICAL_PROCESS_DIED.

I still haven't gotten through all of the links yet but I feel like I should update you on this. I was wrong about the fact that this issue only affected The Crew 2. However, it seems that I can still use my computer normally without any issue.

I've monitored my CPU and GPU temperatures carefully and never once have they exceeded 85C so I'd doubt it is an overheating issue. Plus when I play Roblox my temperatures barely exceed 70C so it should be impossible to have overheated.

Hi Superman. I'm Greg, 10 years awarded Windows MVP, here to help you.

    1. Try these fixes for games crashing in Windows 10:

    1. Do you know when this started? If so See if you can System Restore to a point before the problem began following this guide: https://www.windowscentral.com/how-use-system-r...

System Restore is your first line of defense and can take you back to a point before a problem began. If it doesn't help then you can undo it. Read about it first in the tutorial above and then try restoring to just before this started.

If the problem repeats or System Restore doesn't work then check which Windows Updates were installed at Settings > Update & Security > Windows Updates > Update History, uninstall them there or System Restore again, then immediately check for and block the Updates with the Hide Updates tool explained here: https://www.howtogeek.com/223864/how-to-uninsta...

Even if you've already tried one of these steps, please do them over in sequence,, skipping any that don't apply:

    1. Run the MS Store apps troubleshooter at Windows Settings > Update & Security > Troubleshoot > Additional Troubleshooters > Windows Store Apps.
    2. If the above steps don't help then go over this checklist to make sure the install is set up correctly, optimized for best performance, and any needed repairs get done:

    http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/wiki...

Start with Step 4 to turn off Startup freeloaders which can conflict and cause issues, then Step 7 to check for infection the most thorough way, then step 10 to check for damaged System Files, and also Step 16 to test a new Local Admin account. Then continue with the other steps to go over your install most thoroughly.

    1. Update your drivers and BIOS/UEFI firmware from PC or motherboard maker's Support Downloads web page, using the full model number, Serial Number or Dell Service Tag on sticker. Compare the latest drivers available for download with the ones presently installed in Device Manager reached by right clicking the Start button. Make sure you have the latest BIOS or UEFI firmware, Chipset, Display (Video), Sound, USB3, Bluetooth, Network and all other drivers, or else download and install the latest now.

Updating drivers from the Device Manager or Windows Update is rarely enough. The most basic thing we need to learn to maintain a PC is keep the latest manufacturer's drivers installed from their Support Downloads web page.

    1. If nothing else works then do a Repair Install, by installing Media Creation Tool, open tool and choose to Upgrade Now. This reinstalls Windows while keeping files, programs and most settings in place, is the most stable method to advance to the latest version, and solves most problems. https://www.microsoft.com/en-US/software-downlo...

    HARDWARE TESTS -

    1. Test the memory using WIndows Memory Diagnostics: https://www.techrepublic.com/article/how-to-det...

If problems are found then test the RAM overnight to stress it with the best bootable test memtest86, following this guide to test both sticks and slots:

    https://www.tomshardware.com/how-to/how-to-test...

    1. Test the hard drive or SSD with diagnostics:

    https://www.lifewire.com/free-hard-drive-testin...

    https://mashtips.com/ssd-health-test-and-perfor...

HP and Dell have hardware diagnostics triggered by tapping the ESC or F12 keys respectively as you power on.

Best is to use the HDD/SSD manufacturer's own if there is one, otherwise use Seatools bootable long test: http://blog.nowherelan.com/2013/04/04/boot-seat...

Follow this up with a full Disk Check from the Command Prompt in Repair Mode or from bootable media: https://www.groovypost.com/howto/check-hard-dri... if necessary from the Command Prompt at boot: https://www.tenforums.com/tutorials/2294-advanc...

    1. Stress test the rest of your hardware:

    https://techguided.com/best-tools-to-stress-tes...

If no hardware problems are found then look over this tutorial for a gold standard Clean Install which compiles the best possible Install of Windows which will stay that way as long as you stick with the tools and methods given, has zero reported problems, and is better than any amount of money could buy: http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/wiki...

The reason I suggest this is that no one who has adopted the install in the above link has ever come back to report further problems I've seen, including another version failure. This is because everything in Windows 10 is dependent upon the quality of the install, especially Version Updates which will choke on lesser quality installs, and there is no possibility of problems if you stick ONLY with the steps, tools and methods in that tutorial.

It is also one of life's great learning experiences that will permanently make you the master of your PC because you will learn everything that works best and how to keep it that way.

I hope this helps. Feel free to ask back any questions. Please report back feedback for all steps given so I know what else to suggest if necessary.
