The original Windows 95 disc is not bootable and you need to boot from a floppy disc to format the hard drive and then boot from the CD-Rom to install Windows, if you have a bootable Windows 95 installation disc you will need to run the fdisk command to format the hard disk first then you will be able to install Windows 95.

1-Boot from the Windows 95 disc

    2-Select "Boot from CD-Rom"

3-Then select "Boot computer without CD-Rom support"

4-You should see the DOS command on the A:\

5-Type: fdisk and click on Ok

6-Follow the instructions to create a DOS partition then activate the partition

7-When finished, press Esc to exit the fdisk and then reboot your computer

8-Boot from the Windows 95 disc

    9-Select "Boot from CD-Rom"

10-Then select "Boot computer with CD-Rom support"

11-You should see the DOS command, then run these commands:

    C: (and press Enter)

    md Win95 (and press Enter)

    cd Win95 (and press Enter)

    D: (and press Enter)

copy . C: (and press Enter)

12-When finished, you copied the installation files to the hard drive

13-Go back to the C:\Win95 and run the install.exe

14-Then you can remove the CD-Rom and follow the Windows installation guide

    Thanks for the reply

I am currently trying to install it on direct hardware, not virtualization

here are the ways i tried

    Command prompt in windows vista

Just launching it from the bios, doesn't detect a disk when loading up.

The MS DOS prompt, running D:, always comes back device is not ready,,retry, fail?

i have tried to do it many times on a bunch of my old PCs, none can load the files, even on the dos/98 side

    Thanks,

Hi, I'm Robinson, and I’m happy to help you today.

Please provide more details to help to identify what is causing the problem. Do you are trying to install it on an old computer or using virtualization software? If you are using a virtual machine which software are you using? and which procedure you are using to install Windows.
