Windows 10 update service keeps on running continuously

On my laptop running Windows 10 64 bit Home edition ver 21H2, the 3 services outlined below are continuously taking up 10% of CPU processing.

  1. Windows update
  2. Appx Deployment Service (AppXSVC)
  3. Microsoft Software Protection Platform Service

Please see the screen shot given below for more details. This is leading to battery draining as well as performance issues. So if I need some high workload about 10% of the CPU effort is dedicated to this continuously.

I have gone to Windows Disk Cleanup > Clear System Files > Downloaded Program Files

and cleaned up my laptop. That did not help.

I rebooted my laptop twice gone to settings and ran windows update. Every time I get the message, "You're up to date". But still these 3 processes keep on running.

How do I resolve this issue permanently so that these 3 services do not end up taking a constant and minimum 10% load on my laptop?

So I went to Microsoft Store and it asked me that there is a new update, would I like to install? I said yes and it went on and on for more than a few hours. I finally killed it from task manager and ran wsreset.exe command. And I then opened Microsoft store and let it run overnight. In the morning all the 3 processes were quite.

So how do I stop the Windows update from running the Microsoft Store update too? Is there some setting that can be set or some flag set in Windows registry which will prevent Windows update from updating the Microsoft store or apps from Microsoft store?

You can follow these steps to disable the automatic download and update of apps from the Microsoft Store:

Open the Microsoft Store and do the following:

    1. Click on the "Sign-in" icon and select "App settings";
    2. Disable "Apps updates".

If you need to manually update an application, you need to click "Library". Then click on "Get updates".

    Hi PV1CH,

    Welcome to Microsoft Community.

I noticed that in addition to Windows Update, there are also wsappx processes in the CPU size. This is used when updating Store applications in the Microsoft Store. You can open the Microsoft Store and see if any apps are downloading or updating in the background.

Alternatively, you can temporarily disconnect from the network to see if the three processes are still using CPU (this process will only take a few seconds, so hopefully it won't delay your work). If you disconnect them from the network and they no longer use CPU, an update is in progress.

Thanks for your patience and understanding! If any update, welcome to share with us.
