System Devices / System Timer Driver

Hello

I was looking to install and update newer versions of drivers. One driver in particular, system timer, says it is from 2006. I found an update for that driver on Intel's website here: https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/download/19446/intel-nuc-watchdog-timer-utility.html?wapkw=watchdog%20timer

I have windows 11 on my PC and I only see downloads for windows 10 on the website for this driver. Is it safe to install the windows 10 version of the driver on my windows 11 PC?

I have downloaded drivereasy and it said that driver was outdated. It recommended that driver in the link above for it to be updated. When I updated the driver through drivereasy, it says it was updated on the drivereasy application but when I go into device manager it says it still has the old updated for it.

Because it says it wasn't updated on device manager, I was going to download it myself and update it myself. Is there a reason drivereasy did not actually update that driver? Is it because it is a windows 10 driver and I am on windows 11? Even if that's the case I'm confused as to why drivereasy would say that it updated the driver when it wasn't. I checked other drivers that drivereasy updated and those were actually updated but not system timer. I'm not sure what to do here. Any advice is appreciated.

Thanks

    Hello Mattmcgoo,

Despite those drivers having a release date set to June 21st, 2006, they are not necessarily out of date. Microsoft has its Windows drivers set to this release date so that Windows will prioritize the installation of compatible manufacturer drivers with a newer release date. You can verify this by comparing the driver version, which should be at or below your OS Build found in Start > Settings > System > About, or by running winver. Raymond Chen explains this in more detail on his DevBlog.

The driver you linked is for Intel NUC Products, which are small form factor personal computers that you can customize to fit a wide range of use cases. If you're trying to update the Intel Watchdog Timer's driver on a computer that is not an Intel NUC Product, you should install the Intel Extreme Tuning Utility instead. The installation of Intel XTU is compatible with both Windows 11 and the Intel Core i9-11900K Processor you mentioned in a previous question and will update the said driver to the latest version (11.7.0.1006 at the time of the last edit made to this reply).

    Sincerely,

    Devon

    Hi Mattmcgoo,

I'm Dyari. Thanks for reaching out. I will be happy to assist you in this regard.

First, downloading drivers from any third party tools or software is a risk and it is never recommended, usually, this results in a blue screen of death. Instead, it is always recommended to download and install drivers only from Windows update (automatically) or from the manufacturer's official website (manually).

Second, May I know how did you upgrade your Windows 10 to Windows 11? Does your computer fully supports Windows 11?

Third, it is safe to install the windows 10 version of the driver on your windows 11 PC, but there is no guarantee that it will function correctly and be compatible with Windows 11 or not. Also, from the Intel official website, Windows 11 is not mentioned in the supported OS for that driver:

    https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/downloa....

Fourth, since the mentioned driver does not exist in Windows 11 drivers list, I would suggest contacting the manufacturer's support services to provide you with a compatible driver or wait until they produce drivers for Windows 11.

Please do not hesitate to ask if you need further assistance.

    Have a nice day
