Cant disable HDR, I did enable it and monitor doesnt receive any signal anymore

Setup worked fine, with my laptop (Lenovo X1, Windows 11 Pro build 22000.978) USB-C hub and my two external displays.

But then I out of curiosity did chose to click on “enable HDR” and then my LG monitor stopped working, not receiving any signal anymore. I have googled and been reading a lot of articles. I have tried different cables and all other normal things like connecting the LG monitor directly to the laptop with HDMI etc.. I have also tried to delete the monitor in Device Manager and installing specific LG monitor drivers. Still same issue. I have tried Windows Update, Lenovo update etc. Everything is updated as per today.

If I connect my Mac, then it works without any issue. I don’t see or have any button anymore to disable HDR. I have seen articles that shows the “Use HDR on/off” button, but I don’t have that anymore.

My conclusion: Windows 11 remembers the settings and I can’t disable them nor the HDR setting/memory. Have anyone solved this before.

i found it on reddit! https://www.reddit.com/r/pcgaming/comments/sbl9da/fyi_you_can_press_win_alt_b_to_enabledisable_hdr/?rdt=52864

dont make a system recovery thats is the typical response for when you dont know what happens, microsoft should have a way to solve this problem directly on the screen settings like a buton to restaure to default the video settings.

In my case my laptop dont support HDR , the monitor supports but my graphical card doesnt so it dont work either if on the just secondary screen.

My problem was that i can acess HDR settings because of the setting Multiple displays was in Show on screen 2 .

    HOW TO SOLVE: 😀

    1 - Enable Game Bar:

Open the Start menu, and select Settings > Gaming > Game Bar and make sure Enable Game Bar is set to On.

    2- Insert the HDMI/Digital Port/etc cable
You will see the screen without a signal as before

    3 - Just press "Win + Alt + B" to enable/disable HDR on Windows

Will appear an blue icon saying is disabled or activated on the right of the screen

PS: i wanted to put pics but i cant put on :(

    Hello Robin Blomquist,

I am glad that you have provided me with so much useful information.

I'm looking into the issue, but I noticed that you don't seem to have tried updating the graphics card drivers, so you can try that and let me know the results and I'll keep looking for a solution to the problem.

    Reinstall the device driver

    1. In the search box on the taskbar, enter Device Manager , and then select Device Manager .
    2. Right-click (or press and hold) on the device name and select Uninstall .
    3. Restart the computer.
    4. Windows will attempt to reinstall the driver.

I hope the above information can help you.

If there is anything not clear, please do not hesitate to let me know.

    Best Regards,

Lenka - MSFT| Microsoft Community Support Specialist

Thanks. I tried that and it turns out that one company app (Nextcloud) we are using stopped the restore process. I will have to try to manage that.

Temporary workaround is that I have connected my screen with a Displayport cable instead of HDMI, that works! Know I have the button to enable HDR again (through displayport), BUT I WONT DO THAT ;)

Will get back with result if I manage to use a restore point

Just had the exact same issue. My monitor SHOULD be able support HDR so I decided to enable it. Why not?

Bam... my display went dark and the only way to get it working again was changing this registry key.

What baffles me is that MS does present the option to enable it, but then there's no way to disable it after the screen has gone completely dark.

Also, if you change any other display setting, you get the option to revert after 20 seconds, but not this one. Weird.

I was lucky to have a second monitor attached to my laptop, couldn't have fixed it without one.

Shame on you, MS! Fix this.

I am horrifed to say that it still doesn't work

Though my issue is a bit different, my LG display doesn't work anymore when i close my laptop, but it still works if my laptop is open. but still the solution from Dennis EK still works

and all worked fine before i pressed the toggle to activate HDR, so i reckon this is still a bug

and not being able to turn off the toggle once it is pressed is absurd i think

i am soooooo disapointed in Microsoft, for how long have they had time to gain experience in creating OS now ? 40 years ? and they still do nonsense stuff like this, and it is not even corrected afterward !

    i am baffled
