Ethernet speed limited to 10mbps

Hi everyone,

I need to figure out why my speed is limited to 10mbps when using ethernet. I have Spectrum internet with a router. I don't have the top speed available, but it should be going faster than this. When I run a speed test while using ethernet, it seems to be capped at 10mbps. If I run the same test on wifi, the speed is much faster, but I need the stability of ethernet. I have a gigabit ethernet controller. My desktop and a hard drive are the only devices connected via ethernet, my phone and roku use wifi. Can you help me figure out what is going on here?

    Hi Veronica,

I'm Rodrigo and I will help you.

First, check your network adapter settings, right click the network icon on the taskbar > open network & internet settings > change adapter options > right click your network adapter > Properties > Configure... > Advanced tab > Speed & Duplex (or something similar). It usually is set to auto, you can try to set it to 1Gbps or 100 Mbps to force, but if something else is wrong it won't work.

Try changing the ethernet cable and check if the speed changes.

I tried changing the speed & duplex. I lost the connection completely.

So we have to detect what is limiting your connection speed. Did you try changing the ethernet cable?

I did that, and the speed changed to 100, but I had no internet connection.

I tried changing the cable, I reset the modem and router, and I changed which port I am using. No change.
