Audio Drivers !

Good morning, I have a Lenovo Laptop G700 which must be about 7 years old now. I am on Windows 10 21H2. I have always thought the sound quality was pretty good on my laptop until recently. I use my Windows web camera app, Audacity and a Screen capture app. When I record using my microphone the sound play back is often distorted. I have done nearly all the trouble shooting checks and it is a case of a bit hit and miss ! This morning I went into device manager and uninstalled the High definition audio codec driver. I was hoping it would automatically put it back after a "restart" but it didn't ! It now says High definition audio (but no codec) ! Although the sound seems better it is much lower especially after a recording etc ! Unsure what to do now regarding the "Codec" driver and do I need it ? If so how do I put it back again ?

This is what happens when you willy nilly decides to uninstall stuff without making sure exactly what you uninstall or have that soon to be deleted driver's installation file already downloaded to your computer so that you may need to re-install it when things go wrong.

Your computer comes with IDT audio chipset. When you have the IDT (now bought by Tempo) audio driver installed, it should say "IDT High Definition Audio Codec". You confuse people helping you by forgeting the "IDT" part.

    Image

"High Definition Audio Device" means that you didn't install the IDT audio driver and your computer now uses Microsoft's generic audio driver. Completely different thing.

Your Lenovo IDT audio driver version is 6503. The one in the Microsoft Update Catalog is 6504. Try to install that one.

Dolby Advanced Audio 2 is a playback enhancement.

Same thing for Loudness and equalization button, they are also playback enhancements. Nothing to do with you having bad audio recording. If you have recording problems, turning those playback enhancements on ain't going to solve them. You still have bad recording when you sent the bad recording to other people. If your recording is distorted, it generally means that you didn't properly gain staged your mic input and your mic input signal is clipping.

Hi Dave, just to say thank you for your help today ! I have been juggling about with various settings. I reinstalled Dolby but have taken it off again. The generic audio driver actually sounds better to me along with one enhancement ! Various troubleshooting shows no problem so maybe best to leave well alone ! I guess many years ago this is what my friends and I did "look for that perfect sound" with our Hi-Fi gear ! It now stands idle sadly to say ( much more time spent on broadband). I went on the Realtek site and was tempted to let it scan my laptop ! Would that have been a good move ?

I went into trouble shooting and ticked the Loudness and equalisation button under (properties) enhancements which made a noticeable difference !

I have realised that the Audio driver I removed was the Dolby digital plus advanced audio (CODEC). Over the years and every time I have updated Windows it has been removed and I have had to put it back again. I think someone sent me a link which I download each time.

You are using microsoft's generic audio driver (high definition audio device), not your computer's audio chipset driver.

Loudness and equalization button are playback enhancements. Which means that your audicity recordings remains to be bad. It just masks the problems in the playback. The original recording is still bad.

If you have to rely someone to send you the link to DD plus, that means that it doesn't belong to your computer model. Otherwise, you can just download it yourself from the Lenovo website.

Hi again Dave, I have realised that the Audio driver I removed was the Dolby digital plus advanced audio (CODEC). Over the years and every time I have updated Windows it has been removed and I have had to put it back again. I think someone sent me a link which I download each time. The difference now it seems better without it especially on voice recordings ! I put it back yesterday but then removed it again so unsure what's best ! Not done that driver scan yet you sent !!

    Hi Brian,

I am Dave, I will help you with this.

Your screenshot indicates there is no device driver installed for the audio card on your laptop, you have an IDT audio chip on the motherboard and IDT audio is not usually compatible with Windows 10, because they do not provide Windows 10 compatible IDT Audio device drivers.

Below is the support page for your laptop, they only provide Windows 7 and Windows 8 device drivers, indicating your laptop is not Windows 10 compatible.

Try installing the Windows 8.1 Audio device drivers from there, to see if they will install correctly into Windows 10.
