Touchpad pinch to zoom - increase zoom level vs magnify page.

On one (HP) laptop, when I do the two-finger pinch/zoom gesture on any browser, it will magnify what the page. They I can scroll (swipe) around the zoomed-in page, seeing everything larger.

On the other (Dell 5580) laptop when I pinch/zoom, it will increase the zoom level of the page (110, 120, 130, etc). This increases the text size and rescales the page, but it does NOT increase the size of any images on the page.

How do I make my Dell touchpad behave like my HP?

Thanks!

Mike

    Hi Greg,

    Thanks for the reply.

I've tried all the steps you mentioned, but functionality is still the same. Touchpad works fine, but pinch/zoom continues to adjust zoom level in all browsers, rather than magnifying the view.

I'm thinking it might be a Dell issue. I'll open a ticket with them in the morning.

    Thanks!
    Mike

Let me know what you find out from Dell forums. You have tried everything there is for Windows if you completed every last one of the steps I gave.

You might also want to ask in the best hardware forums Tom's Hardware here: https://forums.tomshardware.com/ since it's becoming increasingly likely this is a hardware issue. You could test that by attaching a trackpad to see if it works properly.

Keep me posted on your progress as I will be here to help until the case is resolved.

I downloaded the latest Intel display driver. Rebooted into Safe Mode, ran the DDU, disabled my NIC, restarted, installed the new display driver. Restarted.

    No change.

I've never, as far as I can remember, had a laptop where pinch/zoom tracks what Zoom does (crtl +/-). Did you by chance get to see the video I posted? At around 8 seconds in, you will see the desired functionality of pinch/zoom. The entire screen zooms in; it doesn't just increase/decrease the zoom level in 10% increments.

I purchased this laptop via Amazon's "renewed" program, so it's just out of Dell warranty, and they want $100 just to talk to me. I'll try the Dell forum.

Pressing Ctrl +/- results in the same behavior as when I pinch/zoom: the images will get larger, up to a point, but if I zoom in too much, it shrinks back down to fit the screen. And with every step up, the page rescales.

Just so I'm clear about what my issue is. In the video below, this is what I want when I pinch/zoom: https://youtu.be/cN-Y4LR5r-8?t=9 But as I said above, on my laptop, pinch/zoom is basically just doing a ctrl +/- type zoom, which is what I DON'T want.

As for your next suggestions - I appreciate them, but I really don't think the video driver is at fault here. There must be some setting or registry tweak, something to change this functionality.

Hi Mike. I'm Greg, 10 years awarded Windows MVP, here to help you.

It all depends on the driver software for the touchpad, what features it has and how it lays them out to change Settings in Devices > Touchpad and the Additional Settings box where most drivers place at least one full tab of Settings.

    1. Update the Touchpad driver from the PC maker's Support Downloads web page, using the full model number, Serial Number or Dell Service Tag on sticker. Compare the latest drivers available for download with the ones presently installed in Device Manager reached by right clicking the Start Menu. Make sure you also have the latest BIOS or UEFI firmware, Chipset, Display (Video), Sound, USB3, Bluetooth, Network and all other drivers, or else download and install the latest now.
    2. If that doesn't help then enter Device Manager reached by right clicking the Start button, go to Mice > Touchpad and then Driver tab. Choose Update Driver, then Automatic to see if it gets a better driver that resolves the problem. If not try Update Driver > Browse > Let Me Pick to try all previously installed drivers.

If the touchpad doesn't show up, from Device Manager Action tab choose Scan for Hardware changes.

    1. If that doesn't work then try uninstalling driver, Restart PC using keyboard to Ctrl Alt Del, on blue screen tab to Power Icon in bottom right, press Enter, arrow down to Restart, press Enter to restart to reinstall the driver.
    2. Run the hardware troubleshooter at Settings > Update & Security > Troubleshoot. > Additional Troubleshooters.
    3. Next try the troubleshooting steps here Windows 10 touchpad not working:

    1. Go to Settings > Devices > Touchpad to go over the Settings. Then choose Additional Settings which opens the Mouse properties box. The Touchpad software installs a tab onto it - usually the last one - that should have more settings to check, including a checkbox to Disable Touchpad when USB pointing device is attached. This prevents palm drag from causing the cursor to jump

I hope this helps. Feel free to ask back any questions and let us know how it goes. I will keep working with you until it's resolved.
