I am taking a class, and the school gave me a copy of Windows 11 Pro Education. I am already running Windows 11 Pro on my machine, what is the difference between Windows 11 Pro and Windows 11 Pro Education? i tried looking it up myself but could not find any answers about these two versions specifically. Am I better off just using what I have?

    Hello,

I have three versions of Windows 11. With Windows 11 Pro Education you will need a work or school account to setup your account when your first log in. It will not let you use a personal account. You can get around this by opting to use a domain join, create a user name and password then add your personal account to the account you just created. It works, but I was not satisfied with the results. When you sign in to your school account, it is linked to your schools tenant and if there are problems you may need to have an admin assist you. Additionally, any group policies that the school has set up will be applied to your account. I can give an example, if the school does not want you to use a USB port with a flash drive, it will restrict access. I ran across this with a user that was signed in to both of her school and work accounts using Windows 10 Pro Education. Once I helped her sign out of those accounts, she regained access to her USB ports. You are better off using Windows 11 Pro with a personal account. With one drive, you can sign into both a personal and enterprise account at the same time, I do it everyday. I never sign in to my computer with my school account. I have received Office 365 from my University, it uses enterprise apps which have better security, so I sign in to activate the license with my school account, but only for the activation.

If you really want to use Education, install Hyper-V on your Windows 11 Pro then create a virtual machine using the Education version. I have done that so I can separate my programming activities from my gaming activities.

If you have the disk space and more memory, you can purchase an upgrade to Windows 11 Pro for Workstations for around 125.00 from the Microsoft Store. I have both a laptop and desktop that I have purchased. While most people use an i5 processor, I use Xeon processors and ECC memory which works well with Windows 11 Pro for Workstations. Even my laptop uses a xeon processor, it does cost significantly more. I have seen it work on an i5 Processor with no issues, it is up to you if you want the additional features.

I want to say, corporate users (including school admins) have more information about corporate versions.

Unfortunately, Microsoft does not provide detailed enough list of functions available in different editions. But I may say for sure, your Windows 11 Pro will be fully compatible with school's requirements.

As far as I know there is a difference in licensing models and this is a single significant difference.

It is oriented to admins and corporate users, and this forum - to home users so local experts may have no corresponding knowledge, sorry.
