Hello!

I had some issues with my computer and I rebooted it, and on re-boot the BitLocker recovery key was reqeusted. I have input it many times and the computer cannot recover after this and I cannot even start my PC in safe mode - my mom has some experience with non-Windows11 and expected to be able to reboot and get it to identify issue in safe mode. Any recommendations? Trying to load Support Assist OS Recovery without any luck. Do you think this is a virus or should I attempt to recover BitLocker data to another computer?

    Hi Anders Oostdyk,

Welcome to post in Microsoft Community.

According to your description, I knew that you were prompted to enter the Bitlocker recovery key when system started up, but it still could not be recovered after entering it. Is that right?

First, you may try the follow steps to breaking out of a BitLocker recovery loop. Try these steps only after you have restarted your device at least once.

    1. On the initial recovery screen, don't enter your recovery key, instead, select Skip this drive.
    2. Navigate to Troubleshoot > Advanced options, and select Command prompt.
    3. From the WinRE command prompt, manually unlock your drive: manage-bde.exe -unlock C: -rp <recovery password>
    4. Suspend operating system drive protection: manage-bde.exe -protectors -disable C:
    5. Once the last command is run, you can exit the command prompt and continue to boot into your operating system.

If you still cannot recover after confirming the correctness of the recovery key, we are sorry that you can only use your device again by reinstalling the system. Because Bitlocker encryption encrypts the entire disk, if you can't get into WinRe, then any fix is unavailable.

Before reinstalling, please back up your data, and you can remove the hard disk from current device and connect it to another computer as an external disk(if you have no relevant experience, you can find your device manufacturer or someone with relevant experience for help).

Step-by-step steps to make a boot disk in MCT

    1. Back up your data,
    2. Prepare a flash driver with at least 8GB (Pay attention to backup data, because creating a boot disk will erase all data of the flash driver). Then operate it on another Windows computer.
    3. Visit Download Windows 11 (microsoft.com) **** and click "Download Now" under "Create Windows 11 Installation Media" to download MCT (Media Control Tool).
    4. Run the MCT, select "Create installation media (USB flash drive, DVD or ISO file) for another PC”, and then choose Language, Version, Architecture (if you are not sure about these, choose "Use the recommended options for this PC"), then select "USB flash drive" in the "Select Media to Use" interface, then make a boot disk.
    5. Boot from the USB flash drive after completion, and execute the installation program.

And you can access **** How to: Perform a Clean Install or Reinstall of Windows 10 - Microsoft Community **** for specific installation steps.

Then about the question of recovering data after Bitlocker encryption, it is out of scope for the Answers Support Community. The best place to get help for Bitlocker is Microsoft Docs, which is intended to support more advanced users such as yourself.

Hi. I'm a blue flaming horse. I am a Windows user like you. I am happy to do my best to assist you with the issue you are facing with windows. Let's get started. Let's try booting from a USB flash drive. The drive must be at least 6 gigabytes. Now, we need to download the media creation tool on another computer. Try asking a friend or someone. To download it for windows 10, go here:

    https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10

    For windows 11, go here:

    https://www.microsoft.com/software-download/windows11

When you have downloaded it, go ahead and open it. Then, agree to the terms. Next, click Create an installation media. If you have data on a USB drive, then the data will be destroyed. When asked, click USB or something. Make sure to have your USB drive plugged in. Then go from there. Next, Remove the USB drive from the working computer and insert it into your computer that you are locked out of. Next, enter the BIOS boot menu by clicking the key that your computer's manufacturer says. Next, Boot off of your USB drive. Then, select your language. Next, on the bottom left corner, you will see Repair your PC. Click on it and go from there. That's all I know about your issue. For further questions to me, reply to this reply and i will get back to you ASAP. For further professional support, go here:

I hope you get your issue fixed and I hope you have a great rest of your day. Goodbye!
