Am I correct then that it is a misconception that only 'active' results are displayed in a Google search and that a 404 error would only become 'known' once that webpage is opened?

Maybe someone knows to the answer to this question:
I did a Google Search on a medical-related topic (Does Eye Pressure Increase With Age) and the first result was a 404 Error page (which I did not know until the link was opened)..
I know 'what' the 404 code 'is' but why doesn't Google filter it out so that only 'active' results are displayed?
A 'simple' answer would be appreciated.

Read the following and then try to think about how you would implement a mechanism that would eliminate "404" errors from the results of a search.

I 'realize' that MS and G are not related but, since 'everyone' has done a Google search at one point, I figured someone might know the answer.
Microsoft has nothing to do with Google.
They are separate Corporations .
I suggest that you ask Google WHY>
