everything else lags when i launch a game.

perhaps im not finding the right words to search but i cant seem to find anything regarding this specific issue...

i recently upgraded to a new desktop PC with 32g DDR5 RAM, i9 12900K & 3080ti (win11) from a gaming laptop (win10). ive always run a browser in the background while gaming on my 8yo laptop with no issues (ofc i couldnt run recent games at highest graphic settings).

i like to watch twitch/youtube/Plex while playing some games (typically grindy ones that dont demand full attention at times) but ever since moving to win11 on a high end PC every time i launch a game everything else lags or freezes, if i tab out to fix stalled media or open any other apps i often get system hangs, app crashes & apps that wont launch until i close the game.

the issue im having trying to improve performance of the system WHILE the game is running is that there are too many possible tweaks yet none of them have had any affect. i guess i expect a high end PC to be able to handle a Game and a few other processes at once (like my ye olde laptop can). i have disabled a lot of background processes and use Razer game booster to free up ram upon launching games. (have had a lot of issues with corsair components & iCue lagging out in this scenario, even my AIO LCD screen and RGB lags when launching games).

should i be in ultra performance? should i run the browser via GPU or iGPU? is there something im missing?

just did a fresh install of windows and followed the steps you had outlined.

so i guess im in the wrong forum now to follow this up but ill let you know what ive found.

everything was running perfectly, got the point of installing the basics and iCue but once i installed Razer Cortex & Synapse then launched a game the lagging returned to my AIO LCD (browser media was still running fine tho). tried disabling some Razer Features (closed Synapse) and discovered it only happens when Cortex "GAME BOOSTER" boosts with a game running. (fixes itself once game booster turns off).

you can choose which services/process/apps or changes you want to activate when it boosts and upon taking a close look at the default settings i noticed an option called "Enable CPU Core" which focuses CPU processes on gaming specifically. so this was the culprit, simply unticking this and using boost fixed all lag issues for me. which makes total sense lol.

thanks again for your advice, though i was hesitent to reinstall windows it was the best option to narrow this down.

appreciate the suggestions i may do a windows fresh install then.

i have been suspicious of iCue for some time based on the behavior it has been showing with this issue. been troubleshooting & tweaking it with no improvement & so far no response from forums & it could be specific to the LCD cooler so not widely reported. first things first ill uninstall iCue then test everything else and go from there. kinda frustrating that i can only use iCue to run that particular cooler's LCD.

interesting. at least i can assume its a known issue that should be corrected... one hopes.

could you point me in the direction of these settings you mentioned that could/should be disabled or what to google on the subject?

Its a complex topic. However, Windows 11 22h2 currently has a block on game performance. There's also certain security settings that I believe they enable by default now on supported computer with 22h2 will also create performance issues with games (its normally been recommended to disable those two settings for games even according to Microsoft).

So if you went with 22h2 then that could be one possible reason.

But, like you say, there's many possible tweaks and issues. It may even reach a 1,000 item list of things. So I'm not going into it any further. I don't find that worth doing :)

Even as Nursemorph asks questions I see below, that could go on for a long time lol.

Oh, there's also the Nvidia GPU performance issues if you've not known about that and are without the now latest driver that should fix it.
