File created 2022 File Modified 2011

The following quote is from a thread entitled "Incorrect 'date modified' and 'date accessed' information for all files." created by John A Clark on August 15th 2010 :

I'm getting a modification date that has passed a long time ago.It says for example:Created: January 35 2014. 12:47:30Modified: January 1, 1995, 2:00:00Accessed: February 12, 2014, 9:30:12The information is correct for the creating and  accessing, but totally wrong for modifying.How this can be corrected? The wrong information goes now together with our CD."

This post was 12 years ago and it seems that the problem, however unusual, persists, For me, it has created some genuine difficulties and I would appreciate it if anyone could provide the answer.

I am really sorry Mark I have no more suggestions. Lets see if someone else on the community has a better explanation.

Here attached in the image are two documents both created today i.e. 12 oct 2022. but one has a creation date of year 1998.

This is because after creating the document I changed my systems date back to 1998 and then copied the document thus settings its creation date as 12 oct 1998 even though the document did not exist then. Now my systems date is set correctly but the creation date on the document will remain 1998.

Similarly when the said file was created in your machine its date could have been wrongly at year 2011 which causes the creation date to remain at 2011.

The issue is caused by how windows detect the file creation date and file modified date. Let’s take an example of a document which was created on 1 Jan and modified a day later on 2 nd Jan. You later made a copy of the same file on 1 feb.

This copied file will retain the modification date of 2nd Jan but since it was copied from previous file this will have the new creation date of 1feb hence the creation date can be later than the modification date.

Thank you for your reply. I understand what you say but, in this instance, where has the 2011 date come from?

In 2011, the songs didn't exist, the recording device hadn't been bought, the music files didn't exist and I doubt that I had this computer. How can a file which was entirely created in 2022 be marked as having been modified so many years ago? What can possibly be the connection with 2011?
