DTS & Dolby digital support external AV receiver

I have a custom PC and I'm using TOSLINK optical to connect to a Yamaha RX V-596 RDS.

Even though it is a Dolby Digital and DTS compatible machine I don't get this output option:
![](https://filestore.community.support.microsoft.com/api/images/ext?url=https%3a%2f%2fgyazo.com%2faa9d4695ddbc5bff0fedc60685a9ceef.png)

If you think what are you saying the options are right there these ^^ actually don't send a DTS or Dolby Digital 5.1 signal and are made for headphones and seem to be a subscription service doing nothing.

I know both the receiver and windows are capable of using these signals because if I go to the "more sound settings" >> Supported Formats >>
selecting Dolby Digital // DTS Audio >> Test gives this:

The DTS icon pops up (when using Dolby Digital that pops up instead) so it is clearly receiving a signal and the audio test also works all my speakers play the sound
still, I don't have the option to select it

I'm quite savvy so obviously, I googled and I found mostly threads from ~2015 that resolved something like this using patched drivers
, first of all, I went back to the older drivers to see if they had the options then i tried the modified drivers which also did not work
(https://github.com/Loliconera/Unlocked-Dolby-Digital-Live-DTS-Interactive-for-Realtek-HD-Audio-Drivers-for-Windows-10-and-11) << the guide

there is also a program on the store called Dolby Audio

https://apps.microsoft.com/store/detail/dolby-audio/9NJZD5S7QN99?hl=en-us&gl=us

but trying to download it just results in a msg saying: something went wrong on our end. You also can't find it by searching in the store I found this link tho ^^

I am at a loss so I need help I just want to use my 5.1 setup and I know TOSLINK has enough bandwidth I know it's supported it just seems bugged in windows 11
I feel like this is most likely a driver issue feel free to suggest solutions

here is my setup:

MPG X570 Gaming Edge WiFi
Ryzen 5800
32 GB ram
RTX 3070

Receiver:
Yamaha RX V-596 RDS

everything i have connected

There is nothing wrong with your computer.

You don't have Dolby Digital and DTS on your computer because MSI didn't pay for it for your specific motherboard model.

Take the Realtek ALC898 chipset (a 7.1 capable chipset), you will find that Dolby is an optional item.

Toslink has enough bandwidth for stereo PCM. The only way to squeeze 5.1 channel into the toslink is by using proprietary dolby digital codec. That's why people used patched drivers --- they took drivers from motherboards which paid for Dolby Digital and made it so that other people with other motherboards who didn't pay for it could use Dolby Digital.

Your computer will ouput 5.1 optical if you use software that paid for Dolby Digital (i.e. Windows 10/11's Netflix app from the Microsoft Store) because Netflix paid for it in their app. If you use the web browser to watch Netflix, you don't get 5.1 optical because Microsoft didn't pay for it.

That's great that you already have some support from Yamaha, maybe they can point to the drivers that need to be updated and the best source for them.

Otherwise, make sure your PC drivers and BIOS are updated from the PC or motherboard maker's Support Downloads web page for your exact model.

Also check at Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update to Check for Updates that you have all the latest including Optional Updates, as there will often be enabling software including Net Framework updates here.

For anything else I'd ask in one of the audiophile forums as they are the hobbyists and engineers who deal with this stuff every day.

Please do let us know here anything else you find out to help others who find this thread in searches.

alright that makes sense using Netflix it's giving me a Dolby digital signal but it is still not actually supplying 5.1 its just driving the main speakers again not the surround, sub, or the center

    Hi Marijn,

I'm Rodrigo and I will help you.

The DTS and Dolby signal will only be sent to the receiver when DTS/Dolby content is playing on the computer. That is why it activates when you do the test, it means that it is working correctly.

Try playing a test file, you can find some files here:
