Photos/Videos from Android phone showing as much larger than they are!

Hi,

Running Windows 10, with latest updates.

I recently transferred a load of photos/videos from my Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra to my PC, into a folder on my desktop. Approx 3000 files.

Since then, I cannot move that folder as it is telling me the file size is too large. The folder is displaying as 32TB!!!!! I don't have that much space on my phone or my PC!

I have seen a few other forums with this issue, but seemingly no solution. Can anyone help?!

    Hi willbeasley2,

May I know by what means you transfer files from your phone to your computer? As of now it looks like the files you transferred to the computer in this way may have been corrupted. But you can contact the relevant data recovery personnel to see if they can help you to repair them.

Also, if you need to transfer a large number of files again in the future, you can use the OneDrive application. After uploading your files to OneDrive, you can see your files in different devices (logged into the same Microsoft account) without having to transfer them between devices. You can refer to the following link for more information.

    Hi Mavis,

Thanks for the reply. Unfortunately, I don't have them backed up, that's why I was copying to the computer, so I had them saved somewhere safe!

Does this mean I've lost them?

    Thanks

    Hello willbeasley2,

    Welcome to the Microsoft community.

I can understand how frustrating the current situation is, and I'm happy to help.

Based on your description, I found the following article that explains the situation you are currently experiencing. Since the default cluster size for NTFS format hard drives under 16TB is 4KB, and for exFAT hard drives over 32GB (your phone's flash space is similar to an exFAT format hard drive), the default cluster size is 128KB, which means that no matter how small the file is, it has to occupy 128KB. So, your 3000+ files copied to the computer will take up a lot of space afterwards.

Default cluster size for NTFS, FAT, and exFAT (microsoft.com)

Also, I would like to know if you have a backup of your 3000+ files on your phone?

If there is anything that is not clear, do not hesitate to let me know.

    Sincerely

Mavis - MSFT | Microsoft Community Support Specialist

    Hi willbeasley2,

If you transferred the images from your phone to your computer via cut and paste, then I am sorry I may not be able to continue to help you with this issue.

But according to the description your image files are in your computer, then you can seek professional data recovery personnel to assist you in repairing these abnormal files, which may be able to help you save these images.

Thank you for your continued patience and cooperation!

    Sincerely,

Mavis - MSFT | Microsoft Community Support Specialist

    Hi Mavis,

Sorry for the delayed response. I plugged my phone into my PC via USB cable, then cut and pasted the images I wanted to move.

    Cheers,

    W
