Hello,

After installing the updates KB5018546 and KB5018418 on October 12, the custom icons I use for my shared folders on my Synology NAS are no longer working.

I have already contacted Synology technical support and here's what to know :

  • the problem occurred after installing the cumulative updates KB5018546 (.NET Framework for Windows 11) and KB5018418 (Windows 11),
  • the configuration in desktop.ini of an absolute path of a .ico present on C: displays correctly the custom icon (for example : IconResource=C:\Users\Tony\Desktop\test.ico,0),
  • the absolute path of a .ico present on Z: (the NAS share) does not display the custom icon (for example : IconResource=Z:\dossier\icone.ico,0),
  • a relative path does not display the custom icon (for example: IconResource=.\icone.ico,0),
  • changing the attributes of the desktop.ini and icone.ico files to "system" and "hidden" before or after copying to the NAS does not display the custom icon,
  • a system icon (for example: IconResource=C:\Windows\System32\SHELL32.dll) is displayed correctly,
  • the custom icons with a relative path are displayed correctly when I access the shared folders from another PC that has not installed the KB5018546 and KB5018418 updates.

Hoping to find help, I thank you for the read.

Sincerely,

Tony.

    Hi,

    I found the solution.

    Source: https://liquidwarelabs.zendesk.com/hc/en-us/articles/360032923571-Icons-do-not-appear-for-Click-to-layer-Shortcuts

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\Explorer\

    EnableShellShortcutIconRemotePath 1

Explorer and the DWORD did not exist. Just manually created and restarted.

    Hello,

we have the same problem. When I uninstall KB5018410, the custom icons from shared folders are visible again. But only for some colored icons I can't uninstall the update everywhere.

I can't find a solution and hopefully Microsoft fix this issue. But I don't think that's going to happen anytime soon.

    Hello everyone,

As suggested by Chandy, I created a topic on the Microsoft Learn forum, you can find it by clicking here.

I specify the exact update that creates the problem (KB5018418).

    Hoping to find some help.

    Hey Chandy,

this is not the right way to target this issue. It has nothing to do with Synology. This is a Windows Problem that occurs whit shared folders via SMB. So Microsoft should fix this problem. I have a similar set up running for more than 10 years now (different hardware). Windows 7, 8 and 10. In all those years, I have never had a single problem. Since this update all my icons are gone. And I have hundreds of folders with custom icons. I am ultra pissed that they are gone. Thanks to TonyRambo, I at least got a hint what the issue behind this problem is. A professional way would have been to contact the development team and submit a bug report so that it can be fixed with the next path.

That way are leaving us hanging. Not very nice...

    Hello TonyRambo

    Welcome to Microsoft Community.

According to the category of/Windows 11/ published by you, we know that your problem is "After installing KB5018546 and KB5018418, the custom icon of shared folder of Synology NAS is no longer valid". If my understanding is wrong, please correct me at any time.

Based on the Update statement of KB5018546 and KB5018418. These two KB updates include the cumulative updates and security updates of*. NET frameworks 3.5, 4.8 and 4.8.1*, respectively. Therefore, the previously customized icons may have been changed, because the icons of the system are displayed normally. If you need to restore the icons of your Synology NAS to normal, please try uninstalling the update of the current version to see if it can be restored to normal.

    • Press and hold Windows+I > Enter Windows Update > View Update History > Go to the bottom > Click Uninstall Update > Enter Control Panel to uninstall these two KB updates.
    • Or under the uninstall update tab > select recovery option > click restart now > this will guide you to restart to the advanced startup interface > click on troubleshooting (reset your computer or view advanced options) > click on advanced options > click uninstall update (remove the recently installed quality update or feature update from Windows) > uninstall the latest quality update (generally fix bugs, optimize minor updates) and uninstall the latest feature update (version update).

In addition, your issues related to icon setting in NAS shared path construction are not yet supported by the community, it is more appropriate to be posted in **** Microsoft Learn forums since it's happening on customized icon with a Synology NAS. You can click Q&A to post your question.

Feel free to let me know if you got any further updates, thanks.

    Best regards,

    Chandy|Microsoft Community Support Specialist
