Issue with MTP USB Driver in Windows 11: Phone is not detected, only charges when connected to the laptop.

Hello. The title tells pretty much my issue.

Laptop information that may be of use:

  • Edition = Windows 11 Home Single Language
  • Version = 22H2
  • OS build = 22621.675

A few weeks ago, I could connect my phone to my laptop via a USB cord and I could easily transfer files between them. To do this, I think I first added the Portable Devices: MTP USB Device via Action > Add legacy hardware. While I successfully installed it, the dialogue box also stated that "This device cannot start. (Code 10)", and the MTP USB Device also has a yellow triangle icon it:

Then, I went to Windows > INF and installed a file called "wpdmtp.inf" then restared my laptop. After which, even with the (Code 10) thing and the yellow triangle mark on the driver, my phone could connect to my laptop and transfer files.

Now, after updating my Windows, I forgot what date or update it was but I distinctly remember that it was an update that brough the "Drag and Drop" feature back, my phone could no longer be detected. It only charges. No matter what I do, nothing works:

  1. I've tried uninstalling the MTP USB Device and installing it again.
  2. I've tried updating the Driver, both through "Search automatically for drivers" and "Browse my computer for drivers". This dialogue box always pops out:

  1. I've tried the other USB Ports.
  2. I've tried connecting my phone to another laptop, and it worked on that laptop. It had Windows 10.
  3. I have also ran the "Hardware and Devices Troubleshooter". It did detect that there is an issue with MTP USB Device:

But it cannot fix it:

I have no idea how to fix this issue. I don't want to remove my SD card from my phone and use a card reader because it's a hassle turning off my phone every time I need to transfer files from it and I might risk damaging and corrupting the files within it. I've heard of "rolling back" from an update or removing the updates but I also don't want to do that because I want to keep the "Drag and Drop" feature.

Any help will be appreciated. Thank you in advance.

    Hello again.

Sorry for the late update. I have performed some of the proposed solutions and none of them worked. I did not try those solutions that involved removing certain updates, performing a rollback, and the like because I'm too worried that I may mess up the process and cause even greater damage to my laptop.

As this issue seems associated with the still relatively new Windows 11, I have decided to give up and just wait for any incoming updates that will eventually fix this. Instead, I bought an OTG. Although this fixes the issue, it is a bit of a hassle and I still would prefer to connect my phone directly to my laptop. That said, this will do for now.

I greatly appreciate the time and effort you put in Greg. Thank you.

    Rey -

There are fixes for Code 10 errors on drivers here to try if the others don't help:

Thank you for this extensive list of possible fixes. I shall try them all except for 1 because if possible, I'd rather not dabble in such stuff because I'm too inexperienced and frankly afraid I might mess up and end up destroying my laptop haha.

I shall give you an update as soon as possible if I manage to fix my issue.

Thank you again for your answers.

Edit: I would like to ask what's the deal with that "This device cannot start. (Code 10)", and why it also keeps saying that whenever I try to update the driver?

Hi Rey. I'm Greg, 10 years awarded Windows MVP, here to help you.

    1. If you want to try to go back only as far as when it last quit working, but not as far as when it was fixed, then you can See if you can System Restore to a point before the problem started:

    https://itechhacks.com/system-restore-windows-11/

System Restore is your first line of defense and can take you back to a point before a problem began like a time machine. If it doesn't help then you can undo it. Read about it first in the tutorial above and then try restoring to just before this started. If System Restore is not enabled on C drive do that now so it's available in the future.

If the problem repeats or System Restore doesn't work then check which Windows Updates were installed at Settings > Update & Security > Windows Updates > Update History, uninstall them there or System Restore again, then immediately check for and block the Updates with the Hide Updates tool explained here: https://www.tenforums.com/tutorials/8280-hide-s...

If necessary System Restore and Uninstall Updates can also be run from the WinRE Repair Mode accessed one of these ways: https://www.elevenforum.com/t/boot-to-advanced-...
