Laptop plugged in but not charging

I'm having some difficulty getting my laptop to charge.

It is a brand-new laptop so problems with the battery and charger shouldn't be a problem.

When I plug in the charger it says its charging, however the percentage does not increase no matter how much time goes by.

I don't know what the issue is, any help or advice is much appreciated.

    Hello Ria, this is Emily.

I am sorry you are having this issue with the laptop. When you are using battery only, does the percentage goes down over time?

When it is charging, does it charge up to a certain perfectage only and then stays on that, or it just won't increase no matter what starting perfectage you might have? Some computer manufacturers have preinstalled power or energy management app, where some optimization is enabled to prevent battery from charging to 100%. Just want to make sure that's not the case for yours.

Otherwise, consider reinstalling the battery driver. Go to Device Manager, click to expand the battery section. Right click on each item listed and uninstall it. There should be two of them. Uninstall both. Restart the computer and see if it helps.

Please let me know how it goes and I am happy to help you explore further as needed. Thanks!

    You are welcome Ria.

The next option can get a bit technical. It is a hard reset.

Make sure you unplug the computer from the charter. Turn the computer. off.

Open the back of the device and remove the battery.

Press and hold down the computer's power button for at least 30 seconds to discharge its capacitors completely

Then you can put the battery back on. Turn your computer on and plug the charger back.

If you are not comfortable doing this, you can call your computer's manufacture support and do it with them on the line with them. The reason I mentioned this is so that you won't void any of your warranty for opening the device, but this is usually a helpful approach. If it doesn't work, they can also help you with possible defected battery or charger issue. They should be all covered within warranty considering it is brand new.

    Hi Emily,

    Thank you for your reply!

When using battery only the percentage does go down over time, however when charging the percentage stays the same. It doesn't increase when charging but stagnates.

I have tried reinstalling and updating the battery drivers however this does not solve the issue.

Any further advice on what to do will be very much appreciated!

    Dear Emily,

Thank you for your advice and support.

The issue has now resolved. It turns out my pc was in fact automatically designed to power down to a certain battery percentage in order to extend battery life. Since hitting around 80% it started charging again, much to my relief!

Once again, thank you for all your advice!
