Dear Concern and Reader,

First of all, I hope whoever is reading this finds you well and in the best of health.

Now, I have a question and hoping someone directly from Microsoft would reply or anybody who knows about RETAIL keys of Windows and software. I purchased Windows 10 Pro directly from **** Microsoft.COM - However, if I do not use my product key for a while until I get a new PC that would be appropriate to run Windows 10 Pro, does it gets deactivated on its own? According to some resources I found on Reddit and other social platforms. Or do I get to keep it forever and can use it anytime? Especially as I purchased my key from Microsoft and have the official receipt/invoice. I know if you purchase a retail key from another official/certified Microsoft stores, things can always go wrong or sometimes be OEM or fake products, but because I got mine from Microsoft, do I have to use it or can I not use it for a while?

I am asking this as my PC just recently broke down and I don't plan on purchasing a very expensive PC yet to run Windows 10 Pro. I currently have a new PC with Windows 11 Home and that's fine for me. Especially as a university Photography student, I own a MacBook and I am not at home ninety-nine per cent of the time (living on campus). So, if I don't use my product for a while or maybe a year or more go by, does it get deactivated or does it remain active, and can always be transferred to new hardware whenever I decide to use it again?

Lastly, I am sorry if I made any mistakes in my writing - I struggle with reading and writing due to learning difficulties, so I used Grammarly and I hope it is not bad at all.

Thanks,

Hammad

As explained on my previous response Ahmad is that if you purchase it as an upgrade (even if this will show as Retail) then this will inherit the OEM rights and therefore it can only be used on the same hardware/motherboard where it was activated and if you have a product key from a direct purchase that you made then you will be able to use a and transfer it to a different device and there will be no issue even if you will not use it for a while.

Alright Hammad and as previously mentioned as well is that if you have a product key from a direct purchase that you made then you will be able to use and transfer it to a different device and there will be no issue even if you will not use it for a while.

Good day Hammad! I am glad to be able to provide assistance to you today. Just to check, is your Windows 10 Pro a direct purchase and not as an upgrade? If you purchase it as an upgrade (even if this will show as Retail) then this will inherit the OEM rights and therefore it can only be used on the same hardware/motherboard where it was activated and if you have a product key from a direct purchase that you made then you will be able to use a and transfer it to a different device and there will be no issue even if you will not use it for a while.

    Regards,

    Paul R.

    Hello Paul,

Thank you for your response. I had two options when purchasing my Windows 10 Pro back in 2021. A USB copy or digital, I went with a digital copy. It mentioned nothing about 'upgrade'.

Link: https://www.microsoft.com/en-gb/d/windows-10-pro/df77x4d43rkt?rtc=1&activetab=pivot:overviewtab - I also see Microsoft no longer provides box copy, not sure if things have been updated since then. I hope this helps. It mentions nothing about upgrade, as when I got it I performed a clean install with that key. I was sent an email from stremail(@)microsoft.com - with my order number and 'Windows 10 Pro' product key. The same order number is under my order history, on my Microsoft Account page under billings and information.

    Thanks,

    Hammad.

    Hello Paul,

Thank you for your response. I purchased a download/digital copy (RETAIL) directly from Microsoft.COM (official website), a full price of £219.00GBP (I live in the United Kingdom). I hope this helps - thank you.
