Lost Admin Rights Windows 11

Help... I don't know what to do!

I created a local user on my computer and now am not able to log into my admin account. The user name is not there anymore. I know the passcode of the admin account but I don't know what the account it was built under or the password of it. I have a new person starting in the office and am trying to set up a new user for them without admin rights, but now I have lost admin rights to the computer.

I have tried everything online to try and switch the local account to an admin account but I don't have the rights to. I was able to find the accounts that are on the computer although none of those look like they are my admin account that I would have set up so maybe I just used one that came with the machine to begin with. It was set up a couple of years ago and used by other employees. I don't know if I just need to order a new computer or if there is a way to gain admin rights now?

All of these options I have to log into an admin account they are not a work around as I am not able to log into the admin account. I can't figure out how this happened but I am not able to log in as the administrator which means the computer is essentially worthless. Maybe I am going to just need to buy a new computer or if I bought a new hard drive would that come up as a new system that I would be able to log in to? I just installed new RAM in this computer but I could save it for another one as well. Any additional thoughts?

I just went into the local account and looked at the other accounts, all of the admin accounts are disabled. I don't even think I have an account that is an admin account. I am thinking when this computer was set up we didn't create an admin account and then when I created a local user account I am not able to access the disabled accounts? The only other thing I can think of is that it glitched when I created the account and deleted the admin account we were using before?

    hi Chris...

I have a $3500. HPworkstation purchased in 2020.... after 15yrs of similar accounts.. yes using the admin account in the prohibitive way... not creating a separate admin account.... but up-until 3/2021 I've never had an issue using the recovery command prompt and resorting my rights ... I cant even use the most basic app or reload the most low level 3rd party apps.... cant use the media tool for clean install b/c my PC thinks im 5.... usually some IT guy had a few command prompt \shript that fixes sh*t in a jiffy... I have back up recovery up the yen=yang... but noooo!! im only 5yrs old...

root cause: each time I logged iin my system kept creating temp accounts for some reason (my 1tara C: drive would run out of space every week for the update) so I just started deleting them prior to my bi-yearly OS win11 refresh.... that was prolly my mistake... however, not being able to use task mngr or safe mode for elevated fixes or not being able to use GPeditor leaves me scratching my head....

I rarely post a comment but my PC has been down for 7days.... and my google crhromebook is no better than a cell for spectacle wearers...

back door ppl.... where is you at..??

PS.. I've not read the great support groups reply's as of yet... hopefully there is a solution.... IDEA: can AZURE possibly be of help...??? 😘

    pardon my rant

I will give you all steps to fix Windows from the WinRE Repair Mode, or bootable media which is the only method that doesn't require a password?

In the steps for Command Prompt you will have the opportunity to create a new Local Account to replace yours, so that the install can be saved. If not I'll show you how to do a Reset or Clean Install, and even provide a way to rescue your files first if necessary.

Use whichever method works in this link to get into Repair Mode so you can try the necessary repairs or do a Reset:

    https://www.tenforums.com/tutorials/2294-advanc...

Easiest is to force shutdown by holding in the power button. Do this twice. The third time you power on it should start into Repair Mode. Once in the Repair Mode try the numbered steps below.

It may be necessary to create bootable media on another PC to access Advanced Startup Options to try repairs, a Reset or do the Clean install. The bootable media has it's own set of files so that repairs or Reset might work better, doesn't require a password, and you'll have it to if necessary do the vastly superior Clean Install.

To create Windows 10 Installation Media on another PC install Media Creation Tool and follow the directions here: https://www.microsoft.com/en-US/software-downlo...

Insert media, boot it by powering up PC while pressing the BIOS Boot Menu Key given here: https://www.sysnative.com/forums/hardware-tutor...

If the media won't boot you may need to enter BIOS/UEFI Setup (pressing key given in chart in link above) to turn off Fast Boot or Fast Startup first.

Choose the boot device as a UEFI device if offered, on second screen choose Repair Your Computer, then Advanced Troubleshoot Options, then:

    1. Try a System Restore, working backward.
    2. If that fails try Uninstall Updates as far back as necessary to see if this was caused by an Update. If Steps 1 or 2 get it started then immediately check Windows Update for Updates and hide them using this tool: https://www.tenforums.com/tutorials/8280-hide-s...
    3. Open the Command Prompt to:

    a) run System File Checker: https://www.wintips.org/how-to-run-sfc-offline-...

    and DISM: https://www.ubackup.com/windows-10/dism-offline...

    b) run a full Disk Check: https://www.windowsdigitals.com/how-to-run-chkd...

    c) trigger Safe Mode with Networking (for internet) or Safe Mode following Option 3 here: https://www.digitalcitizen.life/4-ways-boot-saf... to roll back Updates & Drivers in Windows Update History, update your drivers from the PC/Motherboard manufacturer's website and diagnose further with these steps: https://www.howtogeek.com/164876/how-to-use-saf....

You can also create a new Local Admin account to replace yours: https://www.isumsoft.com/windows-10/3-ways-to-c...

    d) To replace the User account try to enable the built-in elevated Admin account from Option Five here:

    https://www.tenforums.com/tutorials/2969-enable...

Boot into this emergency Admin account (leaving password box blank) to create a new Local Admin account:

    https://www.isumsoft.com/windows-10/3-ways-to-c...

Sign into the new Account, make sure it works correctly, if so move your files over via C:\Users, when ready delete the old account and change the new one to your MS Account if desired in Settings > Accounts > Your Info > Sign in with a MS Account instead.

    1. If those fail then go back to Troubleshoot Options to do a Reset. Make it a deep clean reset to set up a new account, with Cloud option to download fresh installation files so it doesn't use old onboard files that may be corrupted.
    2. If that fails choose Install Now, then Custom Install, then at the drive selection screen delete all partitions down to Unallocated Space to get it cleanest, click Next to let it create needed partitions and start install - this makes it foolproof. Everything needed to Clean Install is here: http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/wiki...
    3. If you have files that aren't backed up you can use the same bootable media to try to rescue your files using these methods: http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/wiki...

Your files should be backed up at all times if you value them at all. In the Clean Install tutorial in Step 5 I give the best methods to back up.

I hope this helps. Feel free to ask back any questions and let us know how it goes. I will keep working with you until it's resolved.

Hi Chris. I'm Greg, 10 years awarded Windows MVP, here to help you.

See if you can show the Admin account on the sign in screen:

    http://woshub.com/how-to-show-all-users-account...

If not you can try whichever of these methods work to enable the built in hidden Admin account used in emergencies:

    https://www.elevenforum.com/t/enable-or-disable...

Sign into the built-in Admin leaving password box blank, create a new Admin account to move into:

    https://www.isumsoft.com/windows-10/3-ways-to-c...

    Hide the built-in account again.

For further help if this is a domain account please ask at our sister forums for IT Professionals, Q&A forums here: https://docs.microsoft.com/en-US/answers/index.... as Microsoft Community is strictly an end-consumer forum.
