PC turns off and on on its own

My PC has had this problem for a while. It happens to shut down without any prior warning or struggles, and turns right back on as if i had manually restarted it. For example, today, i was browsing the internet, and then, out of the blue, my screen and case LEDs went dark for around 5 seconds, followed by the case LEDs turning back on, fans spinning and the bios logo with the loading icon appearing on my screen, and then being asked to type my password to log in. No blue screen or freezes prior to the crash. I can also force this event to happen under certain circumstances, for example, when attempting a OCCT PSU test or trying to use Minecraft with shaders. Could this signal an actual problem with my PSU, or could there be another culprit? I've attempted a CPU, GPU and memory stress test and they all turn out fine, and my boot drive appears as good on CrystalDiskInfo. No minidump/memory.dmp files being created after the crash, event viewer shows the generic kernel 41 error message upon the crash.

I apologize if it seems like a stupid question given the circumstances, but i would like a tech literate person to confirm me whether it is indeed a PSU problem or not, so that i can be sure about replacing the one i currently have. It is a Mars Gaming MPII550. It sounds as suspicious as it looks, but it's a prebuilt pc.

Thank you for that. Let me know the result after you clean it. Usually, automatic shutdowns on computers are caused by either the computer temp going so high it triggers the sensors of the components, malfunctioning RAM sticks or slots, the PSU malfunctioning, or the computer getting uneven current from the wall socket or extension socket ( if you are using one ).

If the PSU is mimicking a power outage then it could possibly cause the computer to turn off then back on as there's normally a BIOS setting to keep the computer off after a power outage or auto turn back on of which defaults often set it to auto turn on. It sounds like a plausible situation as the motherboard wouldn't know the difference.

You should look for that BIOS setting and hopefully it has it for user adjustment. If set to not turn back on, and it still starts up, then it should most probably be a forced reboot actually which can be from all kinds of things.

Thank you for the response. Did you clean the gold contacts of the RAM stick with an eraser before you put it back on the RAM slot? Also, how many drives does the PC has?

    Hello,

My Windows 10 version is Windows 10 Pro 22H2 (OS build 19045.2251)

I've only got one 16GB DDR4 RAM stick, and although i have switched one RAM stick from one slot of the motherboard to the other for an unrelated reason a while ago (my motherboard has two RAM slots), the crash still happened afterwards.

Hi, I’m Nicole, an independent advisor and a Windows user like you.

May I know first the exact version of Windows 10 that you are using?

You can check the version by pressing Windows key to open search then type winver in search. After doing that, click the search result. After that, a small window will appear with the information you need. Kindly share the information here for further assistance.

Also, how many RAM sticks do you have on the Unit?

If there are multiple RAM sticks on the Unit, try to unplug them and use only one RAM stick. Please do note that only do this if you have experience in building desktop computers.

    Thank you,

    Nicole
