I have a brand new pc, not a week old. After downloading some games for my son, a few days later, at least 20 desktop icons have disappeared and been replaced by a generic picture of the world. When you click on it to try and open them (or delete them, I tried that too) I get the error code 0x80070780 "File Cannot Be Accessed by the System". I am able to open the games through steam or from searching the title in Cortana.
How can I fix this and why did it happen? Like I said, the computer isn't even a week old!
EDIT: I just tried to access a picture I uploaded and saved and I'm getting an error there too. It says the file is corrupted. Why oh why is my new pc broken already???
I appreciate any help or advice!

Hello AdrianeSuhayda
Welcome to the Microsoft Community.
According to the category / Windows 11/ you posted I understand that your problem is "the new computer suddenly lost 20 desktop icons, and the error code 0x80070780 File Cannot Be Accessed by the System appeared when clicking or deleting." Generally Speaking, the reasons for this problem are as follows:
| <ul><li><p data-prewrap="true"><strong>A computer that needs to be logged in with administrator privileges. </strong>Often, you may use a computer with a user account, which does not have all the privileges of the computer. Therefore, error 0x80070780 may be triggered due to loss of administrator rights to copy or delete certain files to be manipulated.</p><p data-prewrap="true"></p></li><li><p data-prewrap="true"><strong>System files are damaged or running components are missing. </strong>It is common for folders with important system components to be accidentally deleted, causing them to fail to function properly.</p><p data-prewrap="true"></p></li><li><p data-prewrap="true"><strong>Viruses or Trojan horse software. </strong>With a brand new computer, this should be less likely to happen.</p></li></ul> |

Thanks so much for your help! I should mention that at first I suspected a virus or malware as well but when I ran the antivirus it didn't find anything. I ran the commands you listed and all returned normal results, no corruption found, no integrity violations. I created a new administrative account and also checked that the primary account is administrative, which it is. When I went to log in with the primary account I found there is another administrative account listed too, without a username or password. So I used both my newly created account and the found administrative account but when I log in with those, the desktop shortcuts for the games don't even show up. Did I do something wrong? Should I just proceed to the next step, repair install windows? Thanks again! |
