My Realtek 8811CU is extremely slow

I recently had fiber optic fitting in my house, I was very excited as my previous Internet wasn't great. I am now getting speeds of 280Mbps consistently throughout the house apart from my gaming PC which gets an appalling 3.4Mbps. I assume this is done to the WiFi adapter I use. I have the Realtek 8811CU Wireless Lan 802.11ac USB.

Things I've tried already:

  • Resetting the network
  • Updating the network drivers
  • netsh winsock reset
  • netsh int ip reset
  • ipconfig / release
  • ipconfig / renew
  • ipconfig / flushdns

There is no difference in using 2.4ghz or 5ghz, and I cannot move my computer nearer to my router.

Is there anything else I can do or do I just need to get a new one?

There's a lot of possibilities here lol.

You should make sure the link speed shows something higher. If the link speed is high then its artificially being limited by some setting, configuration, or software which is where it gets into crazy zone. If the link speed is low then its an obvious reason and possibly the only one you may get :)

You can also look at router logs, etc and try to see if it shows anything wrong. Factory resetting the router is also a good idea.

I'm not getting into anything else as I'm not sticking around for months or typing a whole networking book. Hope the best.

Actually, going to add one more. May have to do with the USB. Make sure that's not on a USB 2.0 port at the very least. To get at or near max speeds you're going to have to have that on USB 3.1 and the wifi adapter itself must be able to do USB 3.1. USB 3.0 will be a lot less. USB 2.0 will be horrid much like or close enough to what you're seeing now - it will be very low.

Are the PC and the router on the same floor of the house or are they on different floors?

If you have a smartphone, temporarily set up a Hotspot, then connect your PC to the phone's hotspot network and check if the speed is regular or if it is still low.

Open CMD or PowerShell and type netsh wlan show driver and then hit enter. Copy everything and post the result.
