Why are default .jpg files automatically changed to .jif files with every update?

I work with AutoCAD every day and have for that past 20 years. Over the past year I have experienced huge challenges while attempting to insert photos saved from the web to assigned folders. Today I was instructed to go into the registry and change the default from jif to jpg.

Why is this so? The amount of time lost to trying insert new photos from the web, which are not accessible in AutoCAD because fif files are not supported, is mind boggling to me. This method of selecting a photos from the web to an assigned folder - which remains as a jpg - has worked for 19 years.

I am working from a new Dell descktop Work Station and all of my apps are up to date...

Why, why why?

    Hello, Welcome to Microsoft Community.

Thanks for your feedback, According to my understanding, it seems when you save JPG files, the default extension changes to JIF/JFIF, Am I right?

This is usually caused by third-party software modifying your computer settings.

Please click windows+R and enter regedit

    Open

    HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\MIME\Database\Content Type\image/jpeg

Find the “Extension” on the right, double-click Edit, and change the value to “. jpg”

    Image

Check whether the computer returns to normal after restarting

Disclaimer: Generally, modifying registry subkeys or work group is intended for advanced users, administrators, and IT Professionals. It can help fix some problems, however, serious problems might occur if you modify the registry incorrectly. Therefore, make sure that you follow these steps carefully. Dear Michael Boice1

I'm sorry to reply to you now. I went to investigate the cases where this problem occurred. It seems to be related to AutoCAD. Your extension seems to have been modified by AutoCAD, but it cannot recognize this extension itself.

I don't think I understand why it should do this. You can contact the following AutoCAD technical support and feed back this problem to them.

However, it seems that this problem will not occur again after you use the method I provided to change back to JPEG. If it occurs again, please use the method I provided again and contact AutoCAD to express your dissatisfaction.

    Thank you Lugoo,

I changed the registry before contributing my question/concern above. So far, everything is working well...after a computer re-start.

I how do I isolate the program that may be changing JPGs to JFIF files?

    Michael
