Hello Microsoft Community!

I am having an issue that just started today, very strange and annoying. All of my files are saving in PDF format, no matter the original program or the "Save As" selection. It is still showing up in the file explorer as a PDF. Below are a few steps that I have taken to attempt to resolve the issue. If anyone has any suggestion or insight that may be helpful, I am all ears. Thank you!

  • Attempted conversion from the original program and also Adobe - no luck with this.
  • Attempted to save the file in a different location, both cloud and local. No resolve.
  • Ran anti-virus to check for anything harmful. Clean scan.
  • Ran SFC to check for corrupt files. Scan located and repaired files.
  • Went into the default program settings. No changes were need there.
  • My pc and all programs are up to date.

Again, any help or suggestion is helpful.

Thank you kindly!

    Hi John,

Thanks for responding to this thread.

I have always had Adobe installed on this PC since I purchased. I work with DC, Photoshop, Lightroom etc. So the programs have been installed for quite some time.

I mentioned the steps that I took in my response to Dashdotdot. I will note them again here.

I went into the properties section of one of the documents. In the "General" tab I noticed the type of file section was labeled "Adobe Acrobat Document (.docx)". I changed the "Opens with" option to MS Word, at that point, all of the thumbnails from the documents saved yesterday changed from Adobe to MS Word.

Again, this change impacted multiple documents. I'll ask you as well, if you think this is normal or if something might be wrong?

    Thanks again for your assistance!

    Hi Dashdotdot,

Thanks for giving some feedback on my issue. I am not sure what you mean by wrongly attached to it, if you could possibly elaborate on this I'll look into it. The file itself is saving as a PDF, no matter the origination (which is usually MS word). The file are definitely less than 1MB and can be opened in Notepad, it does show up in the coded format.

As I am typing this response, I went into the properties section of one of the documents. In the "General" tab I noticed the type of file section was labeled "Adobe Acrobat Document (.docx)". I changed the "Opens with" option to MS Word, at that point, all of the thumbnails from the documents saved yesterday changed from Adobe to MS Word.

Is it normal for the change in one document to impact multiple others? The issue seems resolved but I'm concerned that something may be wrong. I have scanned my PC. Should I do so again?

    Thanks again for your response.

    Hello TanaVA_x10,

Thank you for updating and sharing that information. Yes, all similar documents will be changed to Word and this is normal. The method you did usually fixes this type of issue.

    Kind regards,

    John DeV

Are you sure its really a pdf and not just getting wrongly "attached" to it?

Software code creates the file specifically and cannot create a pdf if it doesn't create pdf files. It therefore cannot be a pdf unless the software does it.

Also, its possible to print to pdf. Therefore all things to print could be printed into pdf. But, that's printer stuff and you'd have to be printing and using that save as.

If the file is small enough like 1MB or less, you can open it in notepad. An actual pdf file will start with eg %PDF-1.4. Although, if it used different encoding it might all show up as Chinese or something.

Of course, a virus or something changing the file header could do it but I seriously doubt you'd have a usable PDF just from that since the rest of the file wouldn't be correct for it. It would have to do a full conversion of the saved non-pdf code into a pdf. So if its an actual pdf, this is so very unlikely.

Also, a UI bug could be possible where all files could look like one yet not be.
