Strange But My Monitor Flashes For A Millisecond Every Night At 00.37am!

Hello everyone.

Strange one this, or maybe not lol, but every night at 00.37am on the dot my monitor flashes for a millisecond. I'm not sure how long this has been happening but I started to notice this about a week ago. I've done a web search without any luck of finding a solution or even anyone else who may also have experienced this. Any help would be great thank you.

This is happening on a Windows 11 desktop PC and all the software on my PC is up to date. It has a 6th gen i7 processor with 64GB of ram. My PC has run perfectly for the past couple of years since I built it. It was running Windows 10 up until I upgraded to Windows 11 about a year ago I believe.

If anyone could please help or offer advice then I would much appreciate that.

Many thanks.

Pete

Hi, I’m Nicole, I’ll be happy to help you out today.

It's possible that your monitor is set to perform a power-saving function, such as turning off the screen, at that time. Check your monitor's settings to see if there's a power-saving option and adjust the timing if necessary. It could also be a hardware issue, such as a loose cable, so try checking the connections.

From my personal experience, the cause of my monitor flashing is the power cable as well the power connection here in my place. You may also use this as a guide for this issue.

    Regards.

    Hello Clark.

I've just replied to Nicole and most of what you've suggested I've already tried or will try later today thank you i.e. as you say a program running at the same time every night.

I will be transplanting all the hardware into a new case very soon so I might just do a clean install of Windows when I do if I can't get to the bottom of this but to me it's not a major issue but more a curiosity.

    Cheers.

    Pete

There is a possibility that an app can cause this since the timing is consistent. You can try to do a clean boot before the time the issue happens to check for conflicting 3rd party apps.

A “clean boot” starts Windows with a minimal set of drivers and startup programs so that you can determine whether a background program is interfering with your game or program.

    • In the search box on the taskbar, type msconfig and select System Configuration from the results.
    • On the Services tab of System Configuration, select Hide all Microsoft services, and then select Disable all.
    • On the Startup tab of System Configuration, select Open Task Manager.
    • Under Startup in Task Manager, for each startup item, select the item and then select Disable.
    • Close Task Manager.
    • On the Startup tab of System Configuration, select OK. When you restart the computer, it's in a clean boot environment.

Let me know the update on this issue.

    Thank you.

Hiya Nicole and thank you for responding. I haven't changed any of the monitors settings since I purchased it a year ago. Also there is no way for the monitor to know the time and as this happens at exactly the same time every night then I very much doubt it's on a timed power saving mode/setting. Since this started I have affixed the monitor to a stand on wheels, not that that makes any difference lol, so it was unplugged from the power cable and DP cable.

When I reattached the cables I changed the kettle plug for one that locks into place into the monitor, I don't why these aren't a standard fitting nowadays, and although it's never come out I thought it was better safe than sorry.

It could be a program that's sending/receiving and it does it at that time every night so tomorrow, or later today lol, I'll check each of my app's to see if I can track it down and hopefully it's one of those. As I don't really know when this actually started I will work backwards with software/firmware I've installed.

I run a paid for antivirus suite and a lifetime subscription to Malwarebytes Pro and neither of them have flag up anything for a long time now.

Hopefully what I've said makes sense and if you have any other idea's what the issue might be then I'd love to hear your thoughts Nicole.

    Cheers.

    Pete

    Howdy,

Hmm, that's an interesting one. I'll list out some ideas, but it could be a broad spectrum of things:

    • My HDMI monitor will sometimes flicker from wire cross talk. So, my speaker wires will interrupt its signal occasionally and I have to separate them. Is it possible something powers on during that time or sends a signal that could cause the cross talk flicker?
    • Is there something that automatically powers on during that time that could use a lot of electricity?
    • Do you run any programs that run at that time (e.g. Anti-virus scan)

And of course, checking cables / swap testing is recommended. Super basic things to check, but it does happen- happened to me today lol.

Maybe one of these will help. Good luck figuring it out!

    Regards,

    Clark
