My company's IT pushed a Windows update, and now it is working again. Thanks for the fix Microsoft.
I confirm the fixed driver version to be the same as what TaffUK reported:
Driver Date: 1/31/2023
Driver Version: 10.0.19041.2604
This browser is no longer supported.
Upgrade to Microsoft Edge to take advantage of the latest features, security updates, and technical support.
My Microsoft Digital Sound System 80 speakers have continued to work like a champ since the early 2000s. Just near the end of 2022, the speakers can no longer be started on latest Windows 10 on USB. It is a Lenovo X1 carbon, speakers were previously working with this system. Same thing happens on a Lenovo P1 with latest Windows 10.
The speakers continue to work just fine connected to USB on older Windows 7 and Windows 10 Lenovo laptop systems, as well as an Apple MacBook Pro.
What happened with the latest Windows 10 drivers, Microsoft???

Interesting. Reinstalling the audio drivers may help You can try that.
It might just be the computer audio/mic driver. Try these steps:
- Win + R to open the run box
- Type: devmgmt.msc <Enter>
- Look for "Sound, video, and game controllers" again
- Right-click each driver and select "Uninstall". Do it to all drivers you see under it
- Restart the computer. The restart will reinstall these drivers back automatically
I have exactly the same problem as described above!
No option to "Roll Back" any driver and following all of your instructions above (to uninstall everything) doesn't help.
I'd have to agree with Erik - this issue appeared with the latest driver update (3rd Nov 22).
Thanks for reaching out! My name is, Zadee. I'm an Independent Advisor and a Microsoft user like you. I'll be glad to help you today.
Try to check if you can roll the driver back, Erirk.
-Win + R to open run box
-Type: devmgmt.msc <Enter>
-Look for "Sound, video, and game controllers"
-Right-click each sound drivers > click Properties
-Go to Driver tab
-Click "Roll back drivers" (if clickable)
Note: If you have 2 or more drivers showing up in the category, repeat the process and apply to the other driver. Ignore this if you only see one.
Kind Regards,

Thanks for the tip. Unfortunately there is no option to roll the driver back, it is greyed out.
By some lucky chance it worked the first couple times I plugged it in after having used it on the MacBook Pro. So I guess it doesn't fail 100% of the time. But once it started failing it wouldn't work for several replugs until I plugged it into the MacBook Pro again and then back to Window 10. Then it worked again. But this workaround also doesn't work every time. But it does work with the MacBook Pro every time.
¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Little bit sad that Apple has better support for a Microsoft device than Windows...
