How do I log out of the current Admin account on my new laptop?

My father has just given me his old laptop, but it is still set up with his Microsoft 365 account. How do I log him out of the machine so that I can get it set up for myself, with my Microsoft 365 account as admin (and my own family settings)?

    Hi Tess,

Thank you for the screenshot, is the bottom user on that picture your new account?

if it is, then it is not an administrator account, just a standard account.

You need to log back into the old account, open netplwiz, select the new account and click Properties.

Then on the User Group tab, set that new account as a member of the Administrators Group

Important, do not change the old account there.

Then log back into your new account and in netplwiz you will be able to remove the old account

Yes, I did log out and back in with the new account. I’ve also restarted the machine, in case that made a difference, but I’m still hitting the same problem.

    Hi Tess,

Did you log out of the old account and log into the new account you have created, so that you can remove the previous account in netplwiz?

Thank you. Right up until the last step, that was really easy and straightforward. Unfortunately the “remove” button is greyed out leaving me with only the “add” and “properties” options.

How would I address this last issue?

    Hi Tess,

I am Dave, I will help you with this.

The best option to make that laptop yours is to create a new user account as administrator, then delete the previous account, and then install Microsoft 365 from your Microsoft Account.

Before you do that, you will need to backup any data you need to keep in the current admin account

    Open the Settings App

Go to Accounts - Other Users

Click 'Add someone else to this PC'

Follow the prompts to create a new account with your Microsoft Account details.

    Close the settings app

Log out of that old user account

Log into your new admin account

Click the Start Button, type netplwiz and hit Enter

In the resulting dialog, select the old account and click 'Remove'

That's It, your new Admin Account will replace the old account
