There's a high possibility that there's something wrong, hardware-wise, with that 3.5 audio/mic port combo.
If the built-in mic works fine, that is great news. You can just get an Audio to USB adapter, plugged that into one of your USB ports, and the problem is solved. Or you could also just send it to a tech repair shop and have that audio port replaced too.
