If you are quite cautious, keep scrupulous backups, install at top notch antivirus program and use a current browser like Chrome, there is nothing to stop you from using Windows 7 for most tasks.
Windows 7 still holds 12% market share:

Microsoft discontinued security updates Jan. 2020.
Win7 holds a big enough market share (about 100 million) to still be appealing to sellers of software and devices.
Obviously, you need a legal licence from Microsoft. There are some things you need to know when doing a clean install, but that information is easily found on this web site.
32 bit systems will be the first to become unusable. Eventually, critical software like a browser and AV software will become hard to find and that will spell the end of Win7.
There is nothing stopping you from continuing to use your system. If you do not choose to buy new software or a new PC, you should do the following:
- Reset Windows Update setting to never
- If your hard drive is aged (laptop more than 5 years, desktop 8), replace the drive with a new one and re-install.
- Chrome's "lack of support" merely means they will not further update it. Just like Microsoft no longer updates windows 7.
- when you re-install, create a system image to permit easy re-install at a later date
- do a complete backup of your data on good back up media, and do it regularly
- Install an excellent antivirus program
- Use your Win7 system with caution.
The fact is MS discontinuation of “updates” also resulted in incredible stability. MS no longer changes your system software. I have 92 Win7 system home clients (no enterprises) who have not allowed any updates on Windows for over 5 years and they are delighted.
Fact is, those systems wake up each morning and do exactly what they did the day before in exactly the same way.
Google’s ending “support” will likely result in the same behaviour.
Eventually, the software you want to use will no longer work on your Windows 7 system. When that happens, you will have no choice left but to re-invest. Until then, it is your choice
