Windows11 no audio via HDMI to the 5.1 speakers as soon as projector is ON - working ok on Windows 7 and 10.

SETUP:

Sony 5.1 bdw e780w + Dall Latitude 5530 Windows 11 + Epson projector

STEPS:

connect laptop (DELL) to the Sony bdw (bluray 5.1 system) via HDMI (input) then connect Sony via HDMI cable to the Epson projector (output from Sony, input in Epson).

WHAT i EXPECT:

both audio and video from the laptop is played (video on the projector and audio on the Sony bdw), the same way it was working for years on windows 7 and 10.

WHAT actually is HAPPENING:

when laptop is connected to the Sony 5.1 audio is played via HDMI as expected, Sony is visable as audio output in windows 11. As soon as projector is turned on Sony disapears from the list of audio outputs on windows 11, audio is outputed on laptop speakers and video is played on the Epson projector as expected. in other words widows cannot get both audio and video via HDMI cable to the Sony 5.1 on the same time when projector is turned on and signal is feeded frm the Sony to the Epson.

WHAT i have TRIED:

1. The setup is working perfectly ok on windows 7 and windows 10 (checked on different laptops), same cables, same steps etc. the problem is with Windows 11

  1. Dell laptop from the setup is capable of sending video and audio via HDMI, i have pluged Philips monitor (with internal speakers) via HDMI and it was found by W11 as an audio output, both audio and video was played via HDMI
  2. I have updated drivers, windows 11 both via windows updater and DELL Support Assist software.
  3. I have run windows 11 troubleshooter but is rather limited because as soon as i connect everything Sony disapears from the audio output list and cannot be pointed to the system as a device having problems.
  4. DELL laptop is perfectly working with Epson projector if connected directly via HDMI
  5. If connected via audio cable from the headphones port of the DELL Laptop to the Sony 5.1 audio is transmited OK via 5.1 speakers (but in much lower quality than if it would be via HDMI) - so the Sony 5.1 is capable of geting audio from the laptop while video is played via HDMI cable directly on the epson projector

please help

Then where are the results of the fixes I spent an hour finding for you and asked you to post back detailed results for, so I know what else to suggest if necessary?

There were over a dozen fixes to try, instead you skipped to the last-resort referrals I gave to others who could help, too, as though that was all I suggested.

This is an interactive process. I give steps to perform, you do each one and then report back results until something works, so I know what to suggest next. If you need help performing any step, just ask back. But please do not skip any steps. We often find out the skipped step is the fix.

This is windows 11 issue. That is why i am asking here. There is no evidence that it has anything to do with other companies or providers of hardware.

All evidences pointing to the windows 11 software bug at this moment.

    Hi. Thanks for answering.

I've spent several hours going step by step through your suggestions. There is no positive effect. What i achived is adding new Intel driver for the graphics instead of one proveded by the Dell.

It seems that windows 11 is behaving differently from win7 and 10 in this particular case. As soon as i plug the laptop to the sony "home theater" via HDMI, SONY it is recognized by the windows 11 system. Proper HD Audio device for Display Audio pops up on the device manager list and there is SONY AVAMP device in audio output list as it shoud be (see below).

BUT as soon as i start up EPSON projector connected to the SONY, HD Audio device for Display Audio disaperas from the device manager list and so audio output device. In such case laptop is starting to play audio via internal speakers (realtek AUDIO), video is being transmited via Sony to the Epson as expected.

Projector does not have internal speakers. It is like windows 11 is getting by PnP or something info that projector cannot be target for audio and compleatly disregard the fact that there is 5.1 audio system inbetween.

Once again. It is working perfectly on windows 10 for example or windows 7. I have never had anny issues with this setup till windows 11.

    Any suggestions?

Hello Michal. I'm Greg, here to help you with this.

Try these fixes for projector loses HDMI sound in Windows 11:

    https://windowsreport.com/projector-wont-play-s...

(Avoid ad links which intrude into editorial copy, especially DO NOT INSTALL Restoro, PC Repair Tool and Reimage ads)

    https://www.asavvyweb.com/windows/how-to-fix-hd...

    1. Update the Sound controller driver from the PC or motherboard maker's Support Downloads webpage for your exact model. While there compare to make sure you also have the latest BIOS, Chipset, Display, Network and all other drivers.

If no newer then uninstall the Sound controller driver in Device Manager, restart PC to reinstall it.

Next go into Device Manager, right click Sound controller driver to Upgrade driver, then Automatically.

If nothing newer found in Windows Update then try again but this time choose Upgrade Driver > Browse > Let Me Pick to try all previous drivers queued there.

    1. The Display driver is so important that merely updating it might not be enough. Try everything here to make sure: https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/for...

If nothing else helps I would ask in the Dell Community: https://www.dell.com/community/Dell-Community/c... and also the best hardware forums Tom's Hardware here: https://forums.tomshardware.com/

Feel free to ask back any questions. Based on the detailed results you post back, I will have other suggestions if necessary.
