How to Disable Touchpad???

Well, I made the mistake of allowing my laptop to update from Windows 10 to Windows 11. I have a several years old HP laptop that has an ELAN. I am accustomed to and prefer using a wireless mouse, not the touchpad. Before I allowed the update, I had managed to configure the touchpad so that it was automatically disabled when the mouse was connected. With the mouse disconnected, the touchpad was available. As a result of the Windows update, the touchpad driver was updated. It no longer is disable when mouse is connected. From past experience, I had learned that with updated touchpad driver there seems to be no way to set it up to auto-disable when Mouse is connected. So, I had been using an old ELAN driver where that option was available. I managed to find an old driver on my computer and load it up, but still I seem to have no ability to disable the touchpad when the mouse is in use. ANY SUGGESTIONS? ADVICE? I've already wasted a good hour dealing with the "smooth transition" "upgrade" of Windows! Thanks

I did finally figure it out. It is easy once one finds the appropriate boxes to check and click.

Click on the Windows icon to get this popup:

Click on All Apps (upper right):

Scroll down to ELAN Touchpad Settings and click:

Check "Disable when external USB pointing device plug in." Apply, then OK. Frustratingly, it has taken me about 3 hours to DISCOVER and accomplish this very simple action.

Maybe this step by step with screen shots can be helpful to some others.

Thanks

Thank you for the reply. However, for me it does not seem to work as you described. The first two steps are OK, and I end up with this screen:

There is no "disable option" available to me.

One might reasonably expect that by clicking on "More Touchpad Settings," the DISABLE option might be seen. However, this is what appears: A popup for MOUSE properties, not TOUCHPAD properties.

By going through Device Manager >> Mice and Other Pointing Devices, I do eventtually get to this popup, which seems like it should contain a "Disable Touchpad" option -- if one exists. I have looked through all the tabs and all the options on this popup. There simply is no DISABLE Touchpad option. There is an uninstall driver option, but this is not really what I want to do. I would like to have the Touchpad easily available (but disabled) if my mouse is not available or not functioning. I am still in need of guidance, if Microsoft and/or ELAN have not completely destroyed my previous ability to disable the touchpad when the mouse is plugged in. (Note I had been using an old ELON driver because at some time in past couple of years ELAN had removed it previous available DISABLE option. I did revert to the earliest ELAN

This is typical of problems created every time Microsoft does a major software change. It is one that I find very frustrating. Any additional help will be greatly appreciated.

    Hello bokis123,

If this is a precision touchpad, you can try an option in the tutorial below to turn off the touchpad when mouse connected.
