Hi, I have a lenovo g400 with windows 8 64bit. Yesterday I turned it on in the morning and I got the following message:

Check cable connection! PXE-M0F: Exiting Intel PXE ROM. No bootable device -- insert boot disk and press any key

I looked on the internet and it said that there were 3 common ways this happened 1. the hard drive was disconnected or connected wrong. 2. the bios was out of configuration 3. the hard disk was faulty. I entered the bios and after two changes of settings, the computer started, I turned it off and then I turned it on again and the problem did not occur, I turned it off, I left it like that for a few hours and when I turned it on again the same thing happened to me, again I moved settings in the Bios and it started again .... and so until today, moving settings in the Bios it starts but after leaving it off for a long time, it does not detect the disk.

The Bios always detects the disk and once the OS starts, the pc works normally. but after turning it off for a while it gives the same problem again and again it is only solved by unadjusting and adjusting the BIOS again.

If the hard disk is defective it should not show more symptoms? it is strange that it is only defective at startup and other than that it is solved by manually "resetting" the power order.

You said you looked it up.

These are normally the3 possible reasons for that error you have.

    1. BIOS Boot Order set to Boot to Network: Check BIOS settings for Boot Order.
    2. Check cable connections between Motherboard and Hard Drive.
    3. Failed Hard Drive.

I look after about 100 Win7 PCs and have for many years. I've learned a lot. One thing I know, if a laptop is misbehaving and you cannot figure it out easily AND the hard drive is past its prime, there is no surer war to get yourself a great PC than to replace the HD and re-install.

If you want to go that way, i can offer more tips.

Hard drives are 90% of the cause of failures in a PC. Life expectancy of a laptop HD is about 5 years. Desktop 8 yrs. If yours is over that time, I strongly recommend you replace the HD and re-install Windows. The hard drive itself is easy to replace and you can likely find one on Amazon for about $50.

How likely is it that in this case it is an HD error?
