How do I manually reinstall a touchpad driver on a laptop? +optional question

My laptop model Dell Inspiron 5577 gaming and it has been giving me some trouble over the last few months following a half dozen Windows updates. My touchpad just suddenly disappeared from settings and is unusable, anytime I go to device manager and try to uninstall + restart it never fixes anything and stays listed with the yellow triangle on device manager (I assume it's the PS/2 Compatible Mouse driver since it's the only one with a yellow triangle under Mice and Pointers devices, but I'm not an expert)

I was wondering and would appreciate if anyone had any information on how I could fix this frustrating issue because the standard fix of uninstalling the driver and restarting hasn't worked for me and searching for drivers also doesn't come up with any results.

Also an optional question - My backspace key stopped responding to key presses but is always phantom pressing 24/7 making it extremely difficult to type long messages, play games or just manage tasks in general due to the phantom pressing always forcing the input from controller to keyboard or triggering whatever shortcut is linked to backspace. I already took the key off and cleaned it with compressed air and alcohol and reseated the keyboard but nothing worked. I also tried the same thing with uninstalling the driver (Standard PS/2 Keyboard) and restarting but again no results. I want to avoid replacing it as I just replaced it 8 months ago for the previous keyboard having unresponsive keys, which led me to believe it was an issue with the model - but I am willing to replace it if there is no simple fix that doesn't require disabling the key globally across all keyboards. Is there a soft fix for this or do I have to just replace it?

Thank you in advance for any takers!

Hello Phase. I'm Greg, here to help you with this.

These may be related so let's solve the touchpad first using the steps that work most, then if the keyboard doesn't get fixed at the same time we'll do those steps next.

I'll give you all possible fixes for Dell touchpad issues. Even if you've completed a step please do it again in this sequence, report back results.

    1. Update the Touchpad driver from the Dell Downloads page here: http://www.dell.com/support/home/us/en/19/Produ... for your Dell Service Tag on sticker located as shown here: https://www.dell.com/support/contents/us/en/04/...

Compare the latest drivers available for download with the ones presently installed in Device Manager reached by right clicking the Start Menu. Make sure you also have the latest BIOS or UEFI firmware, Chipset, Display (Video), Sound, USB3, Bluetooth, Network and all other drivers, or else download and install the latest now.

    1. If that doesn't help then enter Device Manager reached by right clicking the Start button, go to Mice > Touchpad and then Driver tab. Choose Update Driver, then Automatic to see if it gets a better driver that resolves the problem. If not try Update Driver > Browse > Let Me Pick to try all previously installed drivers.
    2. If that doesn't work then try uninstalling driver, Restart PC using keyboard to Ctrl Alt Del, on blue screen tab to Power Icon in bottom right, press Enter, arrow down to Restart, press Enter to restart to reinstall the driver.
    3. If those all don't help then try the troubleshooting steps here:

    https://www.dell.com/support/kbdoc/en-us/000123...

    https://support.microsoft.com/en-in/help/402786...

    1. Go to Settings > Devices > Touchpad to go over the Settings. Then choose Additional Settings which opens the Mouse properties box. The Touchpad software installs a tab onto it - usually the last one - that should have more settings to check, including a checkbox to Disable Touchpad when USB pointing device is attached. This prevents palm drag from causing the cursor to jump
    2. If this was caused by Windows Update(s) then you can check which were installed at Settings>Update & Security>Windows Update under Update History, then uninstall them from the link there, and immediately check for these again and hide with the Hide Updates tool explained here:

    https://www.tenforums.com/tutorials/8280-hide-s...

You can also go into Repair Mode by whichever method works here: https://www.tenforums.com/tutorials/2294-advanc... to use the new Uninstall Updates button in Advanced Troubleshoot Options: https://pureinfotech.com/uninstall-updates-adva....

You can also use System Restore from within Windows or the above Repair Mode to get back before the problem began, then check for Updates with the Hide Update tool and hide them:

    https://www.windowscentral.com/how-use-system-r...

    1. If nothing else works then do a Repair Install, by installing Media Creation Tool, open tool and choose to Upgrade Now. This reinstalls Windows while keeping files, programs and most settings in place, and is also the most stable method to advance to the latest version. http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-10/m...

I hope this helps. Feel free to ask back any questions and let us know how it goes. I will keep working with you until it's resolved.
