Icon Issue on windows 11

Hello,

My device is running windows 11 and all of a sudden specific icons e.g. notepad/png etc. are no longer displaying (for example on the desktop - see txt file below)

I've also noticed that certain icons e.g. notepad/system do not show in my taskbar either

I am also noticing that png images are losing their thumbnail

I have tried many things such as

  • assigning a new icon
  • refreshing/deleting the icon cache
  • running reg delete HKCU\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\IrisService /f && shutdown -r -t 0
  • reinstall the affected programs
  • restarting the window explorer
  • run a virus scan
  • run a SFC scan
  • run a DISM scan

Oddly, if I switch to the admin user this is not an issue and all icons/thumbnails display as expected

This is really annoying, can anyone please suggest a fix?

Thanks

    Hello,

I tried everything that you suggested and much much more but nothing worked.

I stumbled across https://superuser.com/questions/1261293/missing-icons-for-trusted-microsoft-store-apps-in-start-menu-search-and-taskbar which describes my exact issue.

I tried the following on the off chance... (I didn't have Google Drive for desktop installed either)

Adding to the answer by @Nate - interestingly for me it worked after installing Google Drive for desktop from this place: https://support.google.com/drive/answer/7329379. I never had installed it earlier, so there was no need to uninstall it, but installing it resolved the issue magically! I then uninstalled it and the icons still show up, no problem at all :). Also found a GitHub page somebody created, it might be interesting for some: https://support.google.com/drive/answer/7329379

IT WORKED!! I have no idea how or why but all my trusted apps icons are back and they also work in my taskbar.

    Thanks

Hi griff_2023, I am Paulo and I'd like to help.

This usually happens if file type associations are messed up. I would suggest resetting all to default and see if that helps

Go to Settings > Apps > Default apps > Scroll down to 'Reset all default apps' and click Reset.

If that didn't work, I suggest you try to initially rebuild the icon cache using option two below

    https://www.elevenforum.com/t/rebuild-icon-cach...

Once you're done with that, do option two for .txt and .png below for the icons and thumbnails

    Hello,

That didn't work either. It seems to be any windows system icons or any apps that have been installed through the Microsoft app store that is the issue.

I've tried a host of solutions but none have worked so far. Very frustrating when it's just a single user affected.

    Thanks

    Hello,

That's correct, the issue is affecting many programs not just notepad, some further investigation today points to system icons such as Microsoft Store, Settings and any programs installed through the store e.g Notepad

Yes, I've already executed that PowerShell command under admin privileges but unfortunately, it has not resolved the issue.

I have tried so many things to fix this but nothing has worked yet, unfortunately, a system restore, or rolling back updates is not an option.

Thanks for your help so far :)

    Hello, thanks for the response.

Unfortunately, none of those fixes have worked for me. I am still seeing a broken icon and also this in the context menu

    Thanks
