Running third party apps on Windows 11

I'm went a through over my Privacy & Security settings, (because i disabled allot of them), just to see if that cased the issue, but it did not

I cannot install any 3rd party apps.... Which privacy setting could be this be ?

I installed via windows update, so that wasn't it, so it's a setting i changed in Privacy & Secret y somewhere

I thought it was due to "where apps came from" "Microsoft Store, Anywhere etc"

so i changed this option to "Anywhere", then tried to install my 3rd party app, and didn't work

When i look in Event Viewer I get this message:

Log Name: Application

Source: Application Error

I re-downloaded the app butt still no go..

To be fair, i install Windows 11 on a VM without modifying any privacy setting, and it runs no problem..

So which setting blocks 3rd party apps ?

    Hi dssds1,

What processor do you have on your device, is it an ARM processor?

I'm baffled.. No idea what caused this

    Created new account didn't help...

I created new a 2nd Windows 11 VM, and turned off all "Privacy settings" like before and its worked ok.. just not in this main system

So i think the problem must be specific to the install.. or something.

I did find a workaround though:

    Image

Compatibility, and enable "Safe Emulation" works., But as to "why" its needed when other VM was working 2nd one was "default"? i have no idea....

    Possible clue to anyone?

    Hi dssds1,

This may be caused by a combination of Privacy settings you may have changed, there is no single setting that would cause this, without knowing what you have changed, it is impossible to work this out, the best option would be to create a new user account and test if you can install 3rdparty software on that account.

    I'm using Windows 11 Pro

I don't see any error,. It just doesn't run..

When double-clicking, I do get the "unknown publisher" UAC (based on default settings), but when i click "Yes" to continue, i do not get any error...

Even tried "Running as Administrator" but, same thing.

Its definitely a Privacy & Security setting i changed, but for the life of me, no idea which one it would be.

    Hi dssds1,

I am Dave, I will help you with this.

    1

Open the Settings, then go to System - About, what is the exact edition (Home, Pro, S Mode...etc.) of Windows 11 that is installed?

    2

If the setting to choose where to install apps form is set to Anywhere, when you try to install 3rdparty software, what error do you see?
