Windows 10 Indexing Rebuild incredibly slow - How can I speed up the process

Good day,

Running Windows 10 Pro 22H2 on a Dell PC 1TB SSD 16GB RAM Intel Core i7

Indexing before rebuild showed about 309,000 items

That included Outlook PST files and the data files - Index Properties Only

Started rebuild 1/27/2023 - today 2/4/2023 - 9 days later only 33,514 items indexed

I know indexing rebuild takes time - but this seems incredibly slow

Steps to date:

Windows is up to date. Dell Command and Dell Support assist current - no problems

Have run some troubleshooting tools in Windows and Dell apps - no issues noted.

Have run SFC scannow and DISM tools - system ok

Have run a PST repair tool

have reduced activity on the PC to give Indexing time to run - still slow

Are there services or other settings I should check to speed up the process?

I am not an IT tech and do not want to mess with the registry.

I thank you in advance for any suggestions you might offer.

Hello, I'm Greg, here to help you with this.

The reason Indexing may be slow is it's meant to be done in the background so it doesn't slow down whatever you're doing at the time.

To speed up Rebuild Index see here:

You can also always try to change the priority of Search Index process running in the Task Manager: https://www.wikihow.com/Change-Process-Prioriti...

Feel free to ask back any questions. Based on the results you post back, I will have other suggestions if necessary.

Are you aware of any issues where Norton 360 interferes with Windows 10 indexing?

Does it need extra help with an exception rule for the filter host and protocol host to work properly?

    Thank you

    Hi Greg,

Thank you for your thoughtful reply.

Via Task Manager I changed the Search Index process priority to high (from normal). I hope it helps......but I am doubtful given that over the last week I have limited computer activity to let Index run and still abnormally slow.

In Windows event viewer - application - there are repeated yellow triangle warnings.

For many the Source is "search" and the Task Category is "Gatherer". Some state Filter host process did not respond and is forcibly terminated. Others state protocol host process did not respond and is forcibly terminated.

Does that give you any insight on the Indexing problem?

    Thank you,

    Pauline
