Windows 7 Internet Explorer connected to home network but cannot display web pages

I have restored my laptop to its original condition and everything seems to be as new except Internet Explorer which gives me the error message that it cannot display the selected web page. The laptop is connected to the router and everything on the home network can access it, and vice versa.

I have disabled the McAfee Security Suite and turned off private browsing but to no avail. The network diagnostic tool says that it could find no fault and running the laptop in safe mode makes no difference.

Oddly, after changing the home web site to Google, the Google start page displayed and its search engine found the right results. However, clicking on any of them resulted in the error message that the page couldn’t be displayed. Nevertheless, it tends to show that the internet can be displayed albeit in limited fashion. Annoying, after trying out the internet solutions (using a tablet to search for them), even the Google page will not now display.

Most of the suggested solutions on the internet are for Windows 8 or later. Is it possible to install Edge on Windows 7 and might this then resolve the problem of not being able to display web pages?

Thanks for the reply Volume Z but I can’t connect to the internet via Internet Explorer or, as far as I can see, any other way even though the network icon says that I do have internet access. Without being able to connect to the internet, I can’t see how I can install those updates.

I have restored the laptop to factory condition and the problem with Internet Explorer persists. However, I have discovered an oddity it that the browser seems to have no problem displaying most/all Google sites (google.com, google.co.uk etc) but cannot display anything else. Some of the Google sites do not display properly (I suspect that there may be a Java issue) but at least they are connected to.

Service Pack 1 seemed to install properly but the other three files still get the error message that the updates are not applicable to my computer.

Download them on another device and transfer them by USB. It actually takes updates installed now to be able to download some or even use Windows Update.
