Low resolution on images and text and low res video playback/video streaming

Hello,

I had an older ideapad that would display 4k and 1080p (if 4k not offered) with no issues since 2017. In Nov/22, all of the sudden low res text, images, and videos played low res contantly. It plays 4k like a 1080, it plays 1080 like a 720. One interesting fact: I thought it was the dated older ideapad built in 2014 (110-15isk, dual core 44020 processor, hd graphics 510) so I bought a new ideapad 1i (quad core, N5030 processor, HD graphics 605) (both 512 ssd, 60hz refresh) (TV is LG49UK63, uhd 60hz, 120hztrumotion). The new ideapad 1i has the same issue. One strange anomaly, is that the new 1i will display a 4k desktop still wallpaper desktop image, but streaming, text, and images or videos played are still low res. TV picture tests are fine. I have also taken the new lenovo 1i to another location with different internet and different 4k tv (newer) (faster internet 500mbps vs 100mbps)and same blurry text and images and video.

I went back and looked at my update history to see if there was an update from 11/22 till today 2/23 to see if I could hide an update after creating a restore point, but after resetting the pc, the history only shows updates from this year since I did those resets in January 2023. So I am not sure if I can restore back to 11/22 on the old laptop? The new ideapad 1i also has been updated and has new Windows 11, unlike the older ideapad Windows 10. I have new internet equipment I am testing today with new service/company to see if it is bandwidth, wifi, (although I have thoroughly replaced ALL prior internet equipment and cables already with prior company, and speed tests are incredibly consistent at 110/11. I must have run hundreds of speed tests by now, and can only remember one at 80 mbps in Dec. So how could speed be fast, but images low res and vid low res? Is that bandwidth? Or Codec? Or refresh rate matching. (one last important fact on refresh rates, display 1 (laptop) and display2 (4k tv) both similarly always showed similar refresh rates around 60hz (one is 59. something, and the other at 60hz, After connecting the new 1i, and then deciding to disconnect it and use the older ideapad again, the 4k tv 60hz changed to 30hz and will not offer 60hz. And I don't think I have ever seen a 30hz listed yet for the 4k tv, not sure. This post asks for Windows 10 or Windows 11, but it is related to both, the old machine is Win10, the new Win11.

At this point, ANY suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Jeff

    Hi again Jeff -

That Basic Driver is only needed in cases where you install a video driver or reinstall Windows and it needs a placeholder until you get the real display driver installed. So as long as it's not the one installed in Device Manager I would leave it in the queue at Update Driver > Browse > Let Me Pick and try any others in that old driver queue to see if they work better.

Then complete all other steps for Display driver in this checklist:

    https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/for...

If none of those help then continue with the other steps, report back results so I know what to suggest next if necessary.

    Hello Greg,

Thank you for your response! I tried to see if another display adapter is queued and it shows the native HD 510 graphics driver and Windows Display Adapter driver, should I remove that Windows one? I clicked on the HD 510 to update, but it did not fix the problem. I had been on the phone with Intel and we installed the Intel driver Update so I am pretty sure it has the up to date driver. We uninstalled many times and restarted ,I also remember rolling back. Should I try again. I guess on to the restore point issue next with Windows C update check?

Hi Jeff. I'm Greg, here to help you with this.

Resolution goes to the display adapter and driver, not the internet connection.

    1. The Display driver is so important here that merely updating it might not be enough. Try everything here to make sure:
      https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/for...
    2. After a Reset or Feature Upgrade Restore points are removed and you may need to turn on System Restore on C to maintain your first line of defense, as shown here: https://www.windowscentral.com/how-use-system-r...   3) However unless the drive was wiped, older drivers may still be queued in Device Manager > Display adapter > Driver tab > Update Driver > Browse > Let Me Pick, to see a list of all previously installed drivers to try.
    3. You can Go over Windows using these checklists to make sure the install is set up correctly, optimized for best performance, and any needed repairs get done:

    Windows 10: http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/wiki...   Windows 11: https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/for...

    1. If nothing here helps then I would ask Lenovo Support as they should support the hardware:
      https://support.lenovo.com/us/en/contact-now

If they won't help then I'd ask in the Lenovo forums where others may know the issue: https://forums.lenovo.com/

Feel free to ask back any questions. Based on the results you post back, I will have other suggestions if necessary.
