Time is wrong in Windows after booting

Hi,

Short version - I have a Samsung Galaxy Book S running Windows 11 Home that doesn't appear to pick up the BIOS time on boot and Windows will typically display an incorrect time at the login screen. Windows time sync will fix it after a few minutes.

Longer version -

I have a Samsung Galaxy Book S running Windows 11 Home 22H2.

Every time I check the BIOS, the date / time appears to be correct.

When the laptop boots, the incorrect date and time will be displayed on the login screen. Typically, it is anywhere up to a day ahead. My feeling is that the advancement is proportional to the time the laptop is turned off.

After a few minutes, Windows time sync will kick in and correct the time. This happens whether I log in to my desktop or if I leave it at the log in screen.

The problem has happened ever since I got the laptop a few months ago.

I am fully shutting the laptop down (it's not sleeping or hibernating)

I have done all the other commonly suggested remedies around the time service. As the time is corrected after a short period, I think those settings are correct.

I have scanned for viruses and malware.

To me, it feels like Windows is approximating the time rather than reading it from the BIOS.

Anyone any idea what's going on and how to fix it?

Thanks.

    Nicole,

Thanks for the reply. I can't see that the CMOS battery is an issue because the BIOS is unfailingly correct (and the laptop is new). To give an example, this evening, I turned the laptop on and immediately pressed F2 to get in the BIOS which correctly reported 17.31. I come out of the BIOS and let the laptop boot and it says the time is 17.50. It takes until 17.56 (its time) before the time then corrects to 17.38.

I will have a look at the start-up apps but I'm not using anything out of the ordinary and frankly, the start-up apps are still starting when the login / lock screen is presented.

    It's a strange one.

    Regards,

    Andrew

    Nicole,

Thanks for your reply. As I mentioned in the original post, I have done all the usual remedies associated with time services.

The BIOS clock remains correct and the Windows time syncs to the correct time after a few minutes, so the Windows services, time zone, etc. appear to be configured correctly and do what they are supposed to do.

The problem here is the Windows clock going out of sync while the laptop is turned off and not checking or using the BIOS time on boot.

    Regards,

    Andrew

Did the Internet time settings set to automatically synchronize with time.windows.com?

Kindly check by following these steps.

    Open Settings.

    Click on Time & language.

Click the Date & time page.

Under the “Related links” section, click the Additional clocks setting.

    Click Internet Time.

    Click Change settings.

Now on internet time settings, check if Synchronize with an internet time server is checked and the server is time.windows.com

    Hi again.

Usually, when the Windows clock is out of sync after you turn off the system, the cause is a faulty CMOS battery. You may need to replace the CMOS battery of the system.

You can also try to disable all startup apps in task manager to verify if an app is causing the issue.

Hi, I’m Nicole, I’ll be happy to help you out today.

The problem might be caused by Windows not syncing the time correctly.

Try to troubleshoot first the issue by following the steps on this link.

    https://pureinfotech.com/fix-clock-out-sync-win...

Also, make sure that location service is turned on in Windows 11 to make sure that the proper timezone will be selected by Windows. You can check this link for a reference on that.

    Update the results here afterward.

    Regards.
