Cannot connect Sony WH-1000XM4 headphones to Windows 10 Asus laptop

No matter what I try the device refuses to recognise them. I’m making sure that Bluetooth is enabled (something that automatically happens once they’re switched on) and click on “Add Bluetooth or other device” and click “Bluetooth”, but it just loads and the headphones never show up on the list of devices.

I’ve made sure already to tick and apply the “Allow Bluetooth devices to find this PC” box in the “Bluetooth Settings” menu of the computer, and the laptops are directly next to the laptop, so I’m at a loss as to why it’s failing.

They connect to my IPhone 6s Plus just fine, and that’s older than this laptop is as far as I can tell.

For reference my laptop is an Acer Aspire ES 13 running Windows 10 Home, and the OS build is 19041.572

    Hello Andrew, this is Emily.

If you have connected your headphones with any other device (in this case, your iPhone), even if it is not currently connected, please go to the other device's bluetooth settings and find the headset listing, and remove it. Not just disconnect, but actually remove or forget it.

Then try to connect with the computer. Make sure you hold down the power button on the headphones for 7 seconds to turn on pairing mode on the headphones for it to be discovered by the computer.

I do notice that your Acer OS build is very outdated. In fact, it is a version that's no longer supported. Please consider updating it. You will need to update via here as updating via Settings won't go through anymore on outdated version. https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-downlo... On this website, click on Update now.

You are welcome Andrew. I am glad it worked.

I understand now, regarding the small storage you have on the computer. That indeed is an issue and you will need to do a clean install in order to get to the latest version. As long as your computer does what you need, I guess you can leave it be.

    Thank you so much! 😊

I haven’t had these headphones long and am more familiar with purely wired headphones, so I’d completely forgotten how to activate pairing 🥲

Once I set it to pairing it worked fine, thank you so much for helping 💗

As for the update, I’m sorry to say that’s impossible. I followed the link and downloaded the update assistant, but the issue is that I simply don’t have the space to spare on my internal drive ☹️

It’s only 28.5GB, and I’ve never even really been able to get more than a few GB free by deleting literally everything. The only possible way to get the necessary 8GB free would be to fully reset the computer and delete everything except for the base Windows 10 operating system, and I would lose so much doing that.

Unless Windows ever figures out a way to move the entirety of the update to an external drive (which absolutely would have enough space for it), it’s sadly never going to happen. But I really appreciate you trying to help with that, honestly it means a lot ❤️‍🩹
