Can I still buy a legal copy of Windows 98, with license?

A friend gave me an old Toshiba laptop that had Windows 98 previously installed on it but he deleted the operating system and everything off of it before he gave it to me. I want Windows 98 reinstalled back on it because I want to be able to play my old PC games on it, so I'm not worried about security issues or anything of that nature (seems how I have no need to go online or use it for anything other than gaming). Where can I buy a legal copy of 98, with license and all? Is it even possible anymore?

    Hi DyaniDoud,

I am Dave, I will help you with this.

Microsoft only sell the latest version of Windows (Windows 110 they do not provide a method to purchase or downloads an older operating system like Windows 98, there is nowhere official to buy that, you would need to search the forums online for someone that has the installation disk and product key for Windows 98, they can probably give that to you, rather than charging for it.

You friend would hopefully have the CD and key but I suppose like deleting the OS off that he threw that out too :)

Mind you that many older Windows applications and games might work on Linux using Wine application. You can check on various older games compatibility here though its not definitive by any means: https://appdb.winehq.org/ It can however have a very steep learning curve as Wine is highly complex when problems happen. Its very easy in specific situations like Steam which uses it as easy as just pushing the play button.

But, on Windows, many old games may still be playable on eg Windows 11 by using eg ScummVM https://www.scummvm.org/compatibility/ and other applications like that such as emulators.

So, in many cases you don't even need an older computer. Only some specific games might.
