Want to share wifi connection over ethernet cable

Objective? I'm trying to set up my Windows 10 computer to share it's wifi connection with another computer that is connected to it through an ethernet cable.

Most instructions I've found on this topic tell you to get the wifi properties" > "sharing" tab. Although at that point I can check the "Allow other network users to connect through this computer’s internet connection" option, there is no "home networking connection" menu underneath, so I can't select the ethernet connection. Leaving it as is, with "Allow other network users to connect through this computer’s internet connection" selected does not work.

I currently have ICS services running, but it still does not work.

Hello, I'm Felipe and I'm an independent Community Advisor, and I'll do my best to help you.

The objective is to share the Wi-Fi connection on your Windows 10 computer with another computer that is connected to it through an Ethernet cable. Here are some steps you can try:

Set up a new Ethernet connection: On the computer that is connected to your Windows 10 computer through an Ethernet cable, go to Network and Sharing Center, and click on "Set up a new connection or network." Then, choose "Set up a new network" and follow the prompts to set up a new Ethernet connection.

Check the adapter settings: Go to the Network and Sharing Center on your Windows 10 computer and click on "Change adapter settings." Right-click on the Wi-Fi adapter and select "Properties." Go to the "Sharing" tab and check the box that says "Allow other network users to connect through this computer's Internet connection." Under "Home networking connection," select the Ethernet connection you just set up.

Configure IP addresses: On the computer connected to your Windows 10 computer through Ethernet, go to the network settings and set a static IP address, subnet mask, and default gateway. The IP address should be in the same subnet as your Windows 10 computer's Ethernet connection.

Check Firewall and Antivirus: Sometimes, your firewall or antivirus software may be blocking the connection. Disable your firewall and antivirus temporarily and see if the connection works.

It's me (rschum_298) regarding 'Under "Home networking connection," select the Ethernet connection you just set up.' - that's the problem. There is no such menu on my windows 10 computer.

Had this same problem and this other workaround worked for me. Just leaving it here in case it helps someone else. After turning on the network sharing, I also had to start Windows 10 mobile hotspot utility. Even though the Internet sharing is over ethernet and not wireless, turning on this mobile hotspot was the only way my Internet sharing started to work. I set mobile hotspot to "share connection from" wifi, and "share connection method over" wifi as well. On my target laptop I even disabled the wifi radio. So while there was no wireless sharing of Internet involved, the only way it'd work for me is if I turned on the mobile hotspot as well.

When it's working, I verified my target computer was indeed getting the shared Internet from ethernet. An ipconfig command confirmed the target machine only had an IP on the ethernet adapter and nowhere else. Yet, on the source machine, the moment I turn off mobile hotspot, the connection sharing dies.

Hello Felipe, thank you for your help. I was originally trying to connect a computer with Ubuntu OS to the WIFI of the Windows 10 computer. When I saw your instructions, I switched to another Windows 10 computer just to see if there was any difference. The same problem persisted.

However, I noticed that the host (WIFI sharing computer) was sending and receiving data over the ethernet connection and the client computer was not receiving. I then ran a diagnostic on the client computer and it reported a problem the DHCP configuration. I allowed the the suggested fix to be automatically applied. It must have changed something to the host (WIFI sharing computer) because everything works now, even on the Ubuntu computer where I did not have to change anything. Apparently, the missing "Home networking connection" menu does not mean anything.

I wish to know more what was automatically fixed (on the host computer), in case the problem comes back. Please let me know if you have any additional information to share about how DHCP settings could cause this problem.

Thanks a lot. So far this is the most useful tip for me. Also don't forget to turn off the power saving mode which automatically shut down mobile hotspot.
