Laptop keyboard randomly stops working.

My laptop keyboard randomly stops working. The only way to get it back to work is by a hard reset (press the power button to shut off the laptop or navigate in the system and press shut down). The it will work for an undetermined amount of time (it could be few minutes, hours, days or even week) and then randomly stop working again. Sometimes it happens multiple times a day. I have the BIOS updated to the latest version. Any suggestions how I can fix this problem as it is extremely frustrating.

My laptop is Dell XPS 9380. I contacted Dell and they want to replace the keyboard. It is clearly not a hardware issue. Please advise if there is a way to fix this problem.

Hello! My name is Mustafa, and I am an Independent Advisor as well as a long-time Microsoft user. I'm sorry that you are experiencing this issue, and I am hopeful that I will be able to help you find a satisfactory solution.

can you make sure that you have the latest windows version, and keyboard drivers on your device?

go to settings> windows update> update

go to device manager> keyboadrs> update the drivers

Search for find and fix keyboard problems on your device and run the troubleshooter to see if it can find any issues.

Also, connect an external keyboard to see if it stops working as well, if the external keyboard doesn't stop working then it is a hardware issue and you should get it replaced.

Please let me know if this doesn't work or if you need further assistance.

    Warm Regards,

    Mustafa

The software is up to date. And just today I updated the BIOS; however, the issue seems to continue. I have an onscreen touch keyboard. It works even when my physical laptop keyboard stops working. If it is a hardware issue then why does it work normally with a hard reset? This is the only reason why I have not replaced my physical keyboard.

Also I occasionally get the blue screen of death; im not sure if this is related somehow but this is also making me think it is a matter of a software problem and not a hardware one.

Also under device manager; I seem to have 3 keyboards; 2 of them is the HID keyboard and 1 is PS/2.

    Hello, Isee

It is normal to have more than 1 keyboard driver. For example, I have two drivers.

Like you said the onscreen keyboard works well, so it should not be a software issue, if it was a software issue then you wouldn't have been able to use the on-screen keyboard as well.

Did you try an external keyboard?

Also about your blue screen do you get any error code or a writing that explains the reason you are having the blue screen?
