Stuttering since reinstall (on new SSD)

I recently got a new SSD and I reinstalled windows on it, deleting the previous windows from the HDD. Prior to the SSD I had no lag/stuttering whatsoever. After installing it I noticed some performance issues (and installing windows on it). It mainly affects games like Overwatch 2 and Valorant (tested so far). I got high FPS (130ish in OW2 and much more in Valorant), but the game doesn't feel smooth whatsoever. Valorant has moments when if I move my mouse, the camera movement is choppy, kind of microstuttering, while overwatch is a struttery mess. Weird thing is that my frame time and fps are both stable and without spikes. More information:

  • Reinstalled windows 7-8 times with proper drivers, win10 and 11 behave the same, every time a stutter mess;
  • double checked connections, even with monitor;
  • installed windows on hdd and ssd both individually, the games behave the same.
  • switched to my old GPU (GTX 960),still not smooth;
  • benchmarked pc, tested components individually, no problem;
  • disabled a ton of windows feature which can cause stuttering such as DVR and stuff;

Every other aspect of Windows is perfect, except the performance issues. Vsync seems to fix the problem somewhat, but there are still some moments in ow where it feels like my fps go below my refresh rate, even tho that's not the case. First thought tearing may cause this feeling of not smooth, but there is something else too.

    After upgrading to ssd same issue for me as well now my game is continuously lagging but after searching solution for many days finally i have decided not to play valorant anymore 😅

    What were the chances lol. I found the same fix *i think*, but i also switched the gpu for my old one, as well as the ssd with the hdd. I will soon change the gpu with the RX6600 to check. What's beyond my understanding is why the SSD causes problems ? What SSD do you have ?

    Same problem, same gpu. My previous OS was on my HDD and reinstalled it on my SSD, which is when the fps problems/stuttering happened. I moved my games to my HDD (after reinstalling my new OS to my SSD) and the stuttering issue got fixed, but moving it back to my SSD causes the fps drops/stuttering to happen again for some reason.

    I won't do it again :D Did it mostly because I was stressed out. And sure maybe it's a driver or some setting which was different before reinstalling. My only fear per say is a hardware problem, but I don't think there is one. GPU is brand new, and the other stuff is 2 years old.

    Much of that was a complete waste to do. Its most likely a driver or setting difference. These two things are far too unknown to help you anyway.

    But, eg Windows gaming mode can affect fps and its not known as to which it was set before.

    The problem is mainly that there's many settings can can affect GPU and far many more combinations of those settings. Eg power settings, GPU software settings, Windows default settings that might not be set on upgrades/updates but are set on clean install, and the list keeps going on.

    You could also try limiting the fps with MSI afterburner and see if some random fps works as sometimes even high fps just isn't in sync with the monitor refresh rate.

    Also too Windows 10 22h2 I believe someone here mentioned has some game performance issues if you were or weren't on that before it might have changed with the clean install. I'm not seeing any known issue for that in the official known issue list so not sure about this. Take this with a grain of salt.

    But, don't reinstall the OS again lol. Stop doing that :)
