Issue with MTP USB Driver in Windows 11: Phone is not detected, only charges when connected to the laptop.

Hello. The title tells pretty much my issue.

Laptop information that may be of use:

  • Edition = Windows 11 Home Single Language
  • Version = 22H2
  • OS build = 22621.675

A few weeks ago, I could connect my phone to my laptop via a USB cord and I could easily transfer files between them. To do this, I think I first added the Portable Devices: MTP USB Device via Action > Add legacy hardware. While I successfully installed it, the dialogue box also stated that "This device cannot start. (Code 10)", and the MTP USB Device also has a yellow triangle icon it:

Then, I went to Windows > INF and installed a file called "wpdmtp.inf" then restared my laptop. After which, even with the (Code 10) thing and the yellow triangle mark on the driver, my phone could connect to my laptop and transfer files.

Now, after updating my Windows, I forgot what date or update it was but I distinctly remember that it was an update that brough the "Drag and Drop" feature back, my phone could no longer be detected. It only charges. No matter what I do, nothing works:

  1. I've tried uninstalling the MTP USB Device and installing it again.
  2. I've tried updating the Driver, both through "Search automatically for drivers" and "Browse my computer for drivers". This dialogue box always pops out:

  1. I've tried the other USB Ports.
  2. I've tried connecting my phone to another laptop, and it worked on that laptop. It had Windows 10.
  3. I have also ran the "Hardware and Devices Troubleshooter". It did detect that there is an issue with MTP USB Device:

But it cannot fix it:

I have no idea how to fix this issue. I don't want to remove my SD card from my phone and use a card reader because it's a hassle turning off my phone every time I need to transfer files from it and I might risk damaging and corrupting the files within it. I've heard of "rolling back" from an update or removing the updates but I also don't want to do that because I want to keep the "Drag and Drop" feature.

Any help will be appreciated. Thank you in advance.

Same scenario here, on Windows 11 Pro. This worked fine prior to my OS upgrade, when I was still on Windows 10. It's like MTP functionality has been removed in Windows 11. No matter what I've done, ensuring it's all set on my phone, installing MTP via legacy devices as you mentioned, etc. nothing works or gets this connected anymore. It's infuriating to have this functionality suddenly taken away! It was by far the easiest way to mass transfer files between the phone & the PC!

I just built a brand new machine and installed Windows 11 Pro.
I installed my Office 365 apps (Outlook, Word, and Excel).

I have done nearly nothing more. I haven't even begun to copy my data files from my old computer.

Yet when I plugged in my phone to get pictures of my new system off it I have the same problem.

The phone had the info in the pull down saying it knows USB is connected and when I clicked it, it showed that I was set to "Transfer files".

But the phone doesn't appear in Windows 11 in File Explorer or in the system tray as a connected USB device.

My phone is a Samsung Galaxy S7.

Funny thing is my wife replaced her S7 with a S21 FE a couple months ago and just last week and she 1st connected it to her laptop and it did the same thing ... didn't show up. She tried her S7 and it worked, so she got older photos her wanted. To get the newer photos she somehow managed to push them to her Google Drive, then sync them back down to the laptop.

So for her it can't be the MTP driver (right?) because the old phone works but not the new one.
Yet I have an old phone and new OS and it doesn't work, yet both our old phones work fine with older Windows 10 machines.
